General Purpose Film February 15, 2005 16 out of 16 found this review helpful
Reala is a modern classic for print film. When Fuji released this film in the 90's it changed casual photography from fairly low tech to high tech without most consumers ever noticing. The secret is the automatic color balancing that this film provides (and which is still rarely matched by other films). If you have ever noticed an odd color cast when shooting indoors or in parking lots at night you understand why color balancing is helpful. Color film is balanced for either daylight or tungston lighting, with a few special purpose exceptions. Tungston lighting is pretty much what you find indoors, with the exception of fluorescent lights which usually come out with a greenish cast. Daylight is bluish, tungston is yellow, this film balances them so regardless of the situation you get great color. It can even handle fluorescent within reason. Just don't expect it to take a picture taken with only flourescent light and not have a little bit of a greenish cast. It doesn't completely remove the color of the light but it reduces it to just giving a feel to the image rather than having someone ask why the picture's yellow when you shot indoors. As a photographer I often manipulate indoor and outdoor light in one picture but when I'm shooting snapshots for my own enjoyment this film is my prime choice, particularly when I have no idea where I'll be going.
Last but not least, it's a top quality film with a nice smooth look and great color quality at a very reasonable price. I shoot Fuji's more expensive professional films for my work but if I ran out I wouldn't worry about grabbing a roll of this to finish a job.
