Amazon.com Product Description This major update to the popular 7105 brings the BlackBerry experience to a whole new level. The BlackBerry 8100c Pearl is not only thinner and lighter, it also sports a memory card slot, a music player, and voice dialing. Other features, such as Bluetooth 2.0, EDGE high-speed data, and the popular SureType keypad make this a complete mobile office solution. And of course, legendary BlackBerry push email is fully supported on the BlackBerry 8100c Pearl.
Small, powerful, and great for getting shots on the go. Learn more about the 8100c Pearl (requires Flash) | Design Like the BlackBerry 7105, the BlackBerry 8100c Pearl is a departure from the form factor of previous BlackBerry devices. This BlackBerry handset is far more phone-like, and RIM's engineers have managed to fit a QWERTY keyboard onto the handset's slim frame. Each button on the keyboard shares two letters and the unit automatically determines which letter is the intended one based on what it predicts you are trying to spell. This unique predictive text technology, known as SureType, makes the BlackBerry 8100c Pearl's handset's diminutive size possible. SureType also learns the words you use most often, further enhancing your typing speed. The BlackBerry 8100c Pearl sports a large 240 x 260 screen that supports over 65,000 colors--plenty of real estate to view your emails, Web browser content, messaging sessions, and attachments. The venerable BlackBerry trackwheel has been replaced on this model with an innovative four-way trackball placed below the screen. On the rear of the handheld, you'll find a 1.3-megapixel camera and a self portrait mirror. The handheld's microSD memory card slot is located inside the device, behind the battery. There's also a standard 2.5mm headset jack that can be used with the included headset, as well as a mini-USB port for data connectivity. Calling Features All the calling capabilities folks have come to expect in a wireless phone are present in the BlackBerry 8100c Pearl. The handset's speakerphone makes it easy to use the device hands-free, or if you prefer, you can use a wireless headset via the BlackBerry 8100c handheld's built-in Bluetooth capability. A vibrating alert, speed dial, and a contacts list/address book (limited only by the unit's 64 MB of internal memory) are also included. Any of the phone's 32 included polyphonic ringtones can be used to create caller-specific ringers, so you can know who's calling without having to look at the handset. The unit comes with built-in ringtones, and more ringtones are available from Cingular's MEdia Net mobile Web service.
See the 8100c Pearl in detail (black version shown). | A new feature, speaker independent voice dialing, allows you to call contacts with the sound of your voice. No prior voice training is required; you can just say a contact's name to call them. Messaging, Internet, and Tools While the BlackBerry 8100c Pearl is a different kind of BlackBerry device, it still delivers the legendary BlackBerry email experience. With BlackBerry service plans from Cingular, you can receive emails instantaneously from up to 10 email accounts (personal and enterprise). With BlackBerry push technology, you don't need to retrieve your email. BlackBerry devices are designed to remain on and continuously connected to the wireless network, allowing you to be discreetly notified as new email arrives. Support is also built-in for viewing email attachments (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, WordPerfect, and PDF formats). If your company has a BlackBerry Enterprise Server installed, you can take advantage of the power of wireless calendar synchronization. Your calendar events are exchanged wirelessly and automatically so that your desktop calendar and BlackBerry handheld calendar are synchronized. All your Outlook meeting requests, changes, and updates are instantaneously synchronized instantaneously with your desktop. Make meeting requests, invite new attendees, and more, all on your BlackBerry 8100c Pearl. Users without BlackBerry Enterprise Server support can manually sync with their desktop calendars and contacts via Bluetooth or USB using the included BlackBerry Desktop Software. Use the BlackBerry 8100c handset's Web browser to access the Internet from the palm of your hand. Browse Web sites, get up-to-date stock quotes, read the latest news, check weather reports, and more--all at fast speeds, thanks to support for Cingular's EDGE high speed data network. Instant messaging and wireless messaging are also built into the BlackBerry 8100c Pearl. MMS messages can be received and forwarded (Cingular messaging charges apply). The BlackBerry 8100c Pearl ships with a number of tools, including a calculator, a calendar, an alarm, and a to-do list. Imaging and Entertainment The BlackBerry 8100c Pearl really kicks the fun up a notch with the inclusion of a 1.3-megapixel camera that features an LED flash and white balance controls. How about some music? The handheld's music player supports playback of your tunes in MP3, AAC, AAC+, and eAAC+ formats. The handheld is also compatible with Java application and game downloads (available via the MEdia Net service). Vital Statistics The BlackBerry 8100c Pearl weighs 3.16 ounces and measures 4.2 by 2.00 by 0.57 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 3.5 hours of digital talk time and up to 360 hours of digital standby time. It runs on the 850/900/1800/1900 GSM/GPRS/EDGE frequencies. The phone comes with a one-year limited warranty.

This phone has a few issues. May 8, 2008 I've had this phone a little over a year now, and I'm not impressed with it. My experiences with the Pearl are as follows.
1) Blackberry Internet Service (BIS) starts at $30/month on top of your monthly rate plan. (The service plan on smart phones starts at $10/month as a comparison.) Only BIS will work on a Blackberry, so if you want a cheaper plan, go with a non-Blackberry phone. Also, if you choose not to have BIS and get the phone anyway (like I did), you won't be able to send/receive photo text messages.
2) The phone does scratch and chip easily. Get a skin for it.
3) The keyboard is great. Its ability to store jargon is fantastic.
4) I drop a lot of calls, and the phone will show to have full signal. I'm not sure if this is ATT's fault or Blackberry though.
5) Sound quality on the Pearl is poor compared to Nokia and LG phones. Voices alternate between sounding tinny and robotic. 6) This phone freezes up every couple of weeks and I have to remove the battery to restart it. During one of these freezes, a missed call notification appeared that I couldn't clear. According to the forums and tech support, the only way to clear it is to wipe the phone, but I haven't tried this. Apparently there's a chance to wind up with a stuck missed call notification each time the phone freezes.
7) While the Blackberry operating system is intuitive, it has limitations when compared to other mobile operating systems.
In short, I'll be going with a different platform next time around.
Great form factor, unimpressive performance. April 14, 2008
Its been now 7 months that I've owned this phone. When I saw it for the first time, I was impressed by its look and the innovative new keyboard style and the track ball. I got the phone along with At& t's data plan. This is the 4th phone that I've owned and the three prior to this were Nokias. It didn't take too long to get used to the new keyboard layout and sending sms and replying back to mail was breeze. But I was not impressed by the internet experience, thats probably the AT&T network! One thing that I hate about this phone is the PC sync software that they supply along with the phone! Its useless, maybe you can sync outlook but other than that you can not tinker with the phone. In my previous Nokia, I could do almost anything from my PC when the phone was paired to it. The other thing thats been irritating me is that the phone just freezes up when u are using it! Even the power off button doesn't work then! you have to open the cover and remove the battery. I've done this so many times by now that I think the back cover is loose and comes off easily! I've had issues with the track ball too, at times it just wont go one way. I can make it move the other three directions but it would get stuck on one direction. restart the phone and the problem goes! I'm also not impressed with the battery. The phone used to hold upto 3 days when it was new, but now after 7 months it can vary any where between 1 - 2days. I receive a lot of emails and if i use the bluetooth in the car it drains even faster!
I presume its not too much for asking of a cell phone to have a nice form factor and high reliability! I just hope the market for Nokia, here in the US opens up and we too can enjoy the rest of the models (the better ones) that never show up in the US! Overall I am waiting for my contract to finish up soon so that I can get a more reliable phone!
easy to use January 24, 2008 I'm a total novice and this Blackberry Pearl has been much easier to use than I could have hoped for. I'm going from no cell phone since the old "brick phone" days to a Blackberry - my friends are shocked. It's smaller than I had thought - but that makes it really comfortable to use. The graphics are good - although I can't imagine really trying to work on many business type applications on such a small screen.I like being able to check on my email & download my music so I can have it with me - also access to Mapquest & GPS software is great to have. It does seem really slow when it comes to downloading pictures, so I haven't really tried to transfer much there- even though I loaded it with a 1 GB card. I also haven't tried to do anything regarding downloads of video. The "Curve" model might be better if you're doing alot that you need more screen for , but for my needs (phone, email, music, web searches)this is perfect. It's also really pretty!!!
Good phone, lousy pda functions December 15, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have had this phone for about 4 months. The size is very good and it feels good in the hand. The phone and PTT functions work very well. The e-mail works as advertised. The browser also works well. I had hoped to use this in place of my PDA but found out it won't serve my needs. You can't really store word or excel documents on it. The sure type has never learned to make "OK" when I type those keys and correct it. I find I text less because it is too slow. You can't save often used text messages. When this dies I'll look into something else. In the past couple of weeks the phone has locked up 3 times. The battery must be removed to reset the phone.
Converted non-BlackBerry believer December 7, 2007 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I was the one to make fun of people addicted to their BlackBerrys, now I am one of them. The Pearl is the perfect size for all that it holds, it has great features and an awesome speaker phone.
