Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
The D-Link AirPlus DWL-G650 Cardbus Adapter is a wireless cardbus featuring the very latest in advanced wireless silicon chip technology including enhanced security to shield and protect your wireless communication from intruders. The DWL-G650 also works with 802.11b standard wireless devices and when used with other D-Link AirPlus Xtreme G products delivers throughput speeds capable of handling heavy data payloads including real-time MPEG 4 video streaming. The DWL-G650 features 802.1x for wireless user authentication, as well as WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access) providing you a much higher level of security for your data and communications than has previously been available in a wireless networking solution. The D-Link AirPlus DWL-G650 also includes a configuration utility to discover available wireless networks and create and save detailed connectivity profiles for those networks most often accessed. The DWL-G650 is a powerful 32-bit cardbus adapter that installs quickly and easily into laptop PCs and when used with other D-Link AirPlus Xtreme G products automatically connects to the network. Like all D-Link wireless adapters, the DWL-G650 can be used in ad-hoc mode to connect directly with other cards for peer-to-peer file sharing or in infrastructure mode to connect with a wireless access point or router for access to the Internet in your office or home network.

5 out of 5 stars D-Link DWL-G650 Wireless Card   September 30, 2008
I currently have two of these cards and I have been very happy with them. I haven't had any issues installing drivers. The card always seems to connect and work well. I also have a D-Link wireless router so the cards connect at 108Mbps, double the 802.11g rated speed of 54Mbps. I would recommend this card.

4 out of 5 stars DWL-G650 on Linux?   September 23, 2008
After failing to get another wireless card working on my Linux laptop, I came across this Atheros-chipset card on Amazon. It comes at a relatively low price, around $15 including shipping.

However, there are some issues to be aware of when using this card on a Linux system. First, early DWL-G650's (hardware version Ax) have a completely different chipset and, as far as I could tell, are not known to work at all under Linux. My guess is that those are the 54-mbps models. (Can anyone verify this?) Mine, which works, is a 108-mbps, hardware version B5.

Second, you need the MadWifi driver to use this card. Ath5k, the newer alternative, didn't work for me. In Debian 4.0 Etch, MadWifi is a pain in the neck to set up. The madwifi-source package from Debian doesn't even compile after the recent kernel update to 2.6.24. You have to download a more recent version of the driver from madwifi.org and compile it. In other words, if you don't have some experience with compiling kernel modules, don't even think about getting this card. (Set-up may be easier in other Linux distributions such as Ubuntu, and maybe it will be easier in Lenny; I don't know.)

That said, I am quite pleased with the card's performance and reliability. I have never had trouble connecting. (But I am on a university campus with access points everywhere, so I don't know how it would work in a home or city setting.)

5 out of 5 stars GREAT PRODUCT GREAT PRICE   September 17, 2008
The G650 installed effortlessly and i was on the web immediately...This solved the problem I was having with the built in wireless.and for less than it would have cost to correct it by a tech person..Part of my decision for going with D-Kink was success with other products ..the other was a great price at Amazon.

1 out of 5 stars Does not install properly on HP notebook running XP   September 14, 2008
Did not install properly. DLInk customer services was not one bit helpful. Drivers have not passed Microsoft's scrunity. I cannot recommend this at all.

5 out of 5 stars Easy and reliable   September 13, 2008
In addition to running without any problems under XP, this card is also Linux compatible.
