1 out of 5 stars Not A Tivo, not ready for recording in prime time   October 2, 2008
I wanted a device to just record the national news everyday. The neuros
has failed in any number of ways. It has a very quirky un-intuitive api. Its slow and un-responsive, and does much much less that a Tivo for scheduling recordings.
The problem with open-source hardware is that you neeed a least one
rock solid app to demo it(which it doesn't have).IF the hardware and software aren't designed to display video, while recording it from the get go, its unlikely that the hardware can be made to do two things at a time with better software.
My unit has occassionaly lost all its settings, but the biggest problem is that since it doesn't have a built in tuner you're dependent on the IR blaster to control a video source( like a cable box). Well that feature only worked for a few weeks then before it stopped controlling the cable box, and it took an effort to get it working again.
To be sure a Tivo can be used to record a show while viewing it, no way can th Neuros do anything remotely like that. a pc is a much better viewer for the files made by the Neuros osd, than the Neuros is.
I'm still looking for a substitute for the orignal tivo boxes , that doesn't require leaving a pc running or paying a monthly charge. The neuros is good for converting a video source to a digital file, but that's all it really does.

1 out of 5 stars Slow/Unresponsive   September 30, 2008
I went with a self-contained solution because I wanted something that "just worked" and didn't need hours of setup. I ended up returning the device, because it was frequently slow and occasionally unresponsive.

I'm going to go with a MythTV instead.

5 out of 5 stars Neuros frees you to enjoy without hassle   September 15, 2008
The hardest part of installing Neuros was moving the TV to get to the video input/output in back. It has worked perfectly and flawlessly since that installation. I'm able to play a great variety of video files, normally meant for computers, on my large TV set. It works exactly as advertised, both for play and record functions. The simple use interface means there is little to worry about as far as menus. I've not tried the memory card update yet, but find the USB input especially convenient. I wish I could get half a dozen for my workplace.

3 out of 5 stars Limited support, but product performs as advertised   September 11, 2008
OSD successfully records and plays back my video collection - which is what I bought it for.
Camera picture playback is poor due to underpowered processor. Manufacturer has attempted to apply new firmware to improve poor responsiveness of the remote control and fix large stability issues. OSD requires frequent rebooting.
That said, it plays back my (non HD) movies very well and it is open source. Code is revealed to the user so that you change most anything (except a codec) that you wish. If you wish a high performance platform for multi-media, there are other products that are better and cheaper.

1 out of 5 stars buyer beware   August 28, 2008

Im really disappointed with this thing. Its output is slow and the pic is dark. They dont tell you upfront that it wont read NTFS external drives so i couldnt use if for the major reason i wanted it- recording and watching of my 500 gig iomega external drive. I also thought it would be grovey if it would record all my old VHS then at least I could get my money's worth-but it wont detect the VCR and I've spent hours trying to program it. It has static white images that is murder for a plasma TV. Also, it will pick up my DVD but getting it to record took a lot of patience. The first time it would only record a few seconds- then a half hour- even when i programmed it to record longer than that. It just flaked out and turns black right in the middle of the movie. You have to watch the film on that channel while it is recording and the pic is out of focus and dark on my 45 inch HD plasma. Just do some research before you buy something like this. Also, when I used my FAT32 Western Digiatal drive to watch the programs i had stored on my PC the playback video was out of sync with the audio. I then found out through their forums that if it was previously recorded with channel 6 it will play out of sync unless it was copied with Channel 2- whatever that means. So basically, it doesnt even playback anything i had previously stored. Absolutly worthless to me.
