Enclosure works fine, but have a few comments. September 12, 2008 I have purchased three Acomdata hard drive enclosures from Amazon.com, and all have worked fine. They rate five stars for operating, but I used four stars because it was necessary to bend two wires before installing the drive. Rubber feet prevent the enclosure from sliding on a flat surface, and the mount prevents the enclosure from easily falling over.
When selecting Acomdata enclosures, notice that Amazon.com sells two almost identical versions, one with firewire and the other without. Searching usually lists one or the other (not both) depending upon the search terms. This unit is the non-firewire version.
Acomdata has two very similar hard drive enclosures, The HDEXXU2E3 without firewire, (Amazon picture shows the enclosure) and the HDEXXU3FE3 with firewire (picture shows the retail package containing the enclosure). I found it much easier to install a drive in the non-firewire option, a topic to consider if you change drives frequently.
The HDEXXU2E3 non-firewire version has a shorter PC board, allowing more room for the hard drive. The firewire version has a longer PC board, and the drive must be initially installed at an angle to avoid interference with the front panel. It is difficult to see the data connector and line up the pins correctly. The shorter PC board in the non-firewire version allows the hard drive to be in the same plane as the connector during initial installation. The hard drive can be positioned sideways for the pins to line up, then tilted to partially insert one row of pins (moving slightly sideways if necessary, then put back in the same plane for the drive to be fully inserted. I had trouble inserting the drive adequately for the hard drive mounting holes to align with the drive in the firewire version, but did not have that problem with the non-firewire version.
Another issue occurred with wires to the on-off switch in the non-firewire version; the wires did not allow the drive to be connected. I solved this problem by bending the wires 90 degrees with needle nose pliers. The wires sprung back, but I was able to bend them a second time as the drive was inserted. Do not bend immediately behind the switch; bend where the heat shrink tubing is only covers the wire.
Other more minor issues for both enclosures are: Properly orienting the power connector pins is not easy. Some pressure is required, and it is not clear if you are not using necessary force or the pins are mismatched. There is a flat side on the plug; it should be on the right side, facing the rear of the enclosure. I used a pencil to write flat on the the aluminum enclosure near the connector.
Other external devices, like the Buffalo external drive have a very similar power supply connector. I used a gummed label to identify the Acomdata power supply.
If you do not install the rear panel immediately after inserting the drive in the enclosure, it is easy to tilt the enclosure, causing the drive assembly to slide out and fall. I caught one in midair.
The screws to secure the drive and rear panel resemble each other but differ. Be careful.
The part number is only listed on the box. I cut a gummed label and listed the part number on the bottom of the enclosure for future reference.
A mini USB receptacle is installed on the enclosure. If you are in a hurry, it is possible to plug in the USB cable incorrectly, damaging the electronics.
The front panel led is annoyingly bright; I position the enclosure so it does not shine in my eyes.
Great way to put an old drive back to work May 31, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is not the cutest case on the market but it's quite nice for a professional appearance. I use this to case an old drive that someone gave me and now I use it to run Time Machine on my mac. It was very easy to install once I got the jumper pin right. The instructions were incorrect for my particular drive but it was easy to figure out - If slave doesn't work try master. I would have given it 5 stars if I hadn't had the problem with the instructions and if the price were more competitive. I'm an Amazon Prime member and I chose this model over the rest because it was the best value that qualified for free shipping.
did what its suposed to do April 6, 2008 works just fine. got here on time and all that. i used an 80GB HD on it. i also use vista and the HD was in an XP computer is if that matters. if a friend ever needed to turn a harddrive into an external harddrive i'd point them to this item and this seller.
one weird thing is that it kept asking for permission from the administrator. but eventually the folders and stuff opened and i got my files onto my new PC
Nice Enclosure March 30, 2008 I had an old computer that the motherboard went out on, and wanted to recover the files on the hard drive....after reading a bunch of reviews, selected this unit.
Just installed the old hard drive and plugged in... worked wonderfully.
I only gave it 4 stars because I'm not sure, other than working really well, what one of these boxes are supposed to do...you do have to take the case apart and plug in.
Would buy again and highly recommend to friends.
