Product Description
Jazz up your data storage with Samba. The AcomData Samba Enclosure lets you transform a 3.5" IDE hard drive into high-performance portable storage. Samba?s smart, sturdy chassis and the illustrated, easy-to-follow guide make installation as simple as humming your favorite tune. And feel free to improvise because you can install either a PATA or SATA hard drive. Either way, Samba's near-silent operation will help you stay in the groove while you jam in tons of music, photos, video - and any other digital files.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Doesn't spin down when idle   July 30, 2008
I recently bought several of these. At first I was very happy with the them. The build quality seemed very nice, they were solid.

Then I noticed the heat, it wasn't significant but it was enough for me to take a closer look. The drives never spun down! I asked acomdata tech support about it and never received a response. I was concerned this could lead to premature failure, not to mention the extra heat added to the room and higher power usage.

I ended up returning them all and purchased another brand.

Also, just a minor gripe, the blue LEDs on the front were INSANELY bright. I had to either point them away or put electrical tape over the light, which is what I did. Even then, a surprising amount of blue light made it's way through the vents and illuminated the room at night.

4 out of 5 stars Big Chunk of Aluminum   January 4, 2008
I bought the black model recently at a local store. Setup was easy. Initially, the hard drive didn't work because I set it to the IDE master (as per instruction manual) - it worked after I switched it to cable select.

Here are some thoughts on the device.

Pros:
- Exterior construction is solid. The black exterior in the picture is a big chunk of aluminum. The front and rear panels are plastic.
- No fans! The large aluminum block seems to do a good job dissipating the heat.
- Takes a PATA(IDE) or SATA hard drive. I'm using IDE, but the SATA option makes this case flexible for future drive.

Cons:
- The interior tray is mostly plastic. I mention this because I originally intended to swap out hard drives with this case to use some older drives. However, the interior construction isn't that stable and I don't think it will survive if I repeatedly swap the drives.
- Doesn't power down with PC. It uses a physical switch in the back, so the drive stays on after your PC has powered down.

Overall, I recommend this drive enclosure.
