5 out of 5 stars Gorillapod? VersatilePod! Ingenius design. Excellent for everyone and not just for cameras.   July 24, 2008
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/RTAI5CO5RBCIN Whether you're a beginner, amateur, pro photographer, child or adult, this is a must-have tripod for everyone.

This review is for the Joby GP1-M1EN Gorillapod that includes also two adhesive clips and a suction cup clip.

This is THE tripod that you'll frequently be using, with its ability to twist to different positions and grab on to the most unusual places that plain, boring -- even super expensive tripods -- could never do. It has many different uses (not just for cameras). I never thought I would be playing with a tripod, I mean... my Gorillapod, for hours. (See my video!)

It's fun and amazing what this thing can do.

GORILLApod is great for GUERRILLA filmmakers. If you film a lot of stuff with a small digital camera, you'll love this. (And they also have a larger Gorillapod for actual video cameras and SLRs, which I will definitely get too.)

It can act as a steadycam for your wrist. Just wrap the legs on your wrist and you can even film while having both hands free!

I've also actually attached the Gorillapod on my car door handle, with a small digital camera (Canon SD300) attached to it, and went for drive. (You can see the results around the second half of the video!). I had all three legs, wrapped around on the handle, and since it has several rubber grips on the legs, the thing wasn't going anywhere; it was more of a concern of how well the clip was going to hold the camera. However, I was amazed by the results. See the video for yourself. It really was secure the entire time. (although I would not recommend doing this for most people, for obvious reasons, and especially if your digital camera is big, etc.)

This isn't just for cameras, but excellent for video/mp3 players. Seriously, it's up to your imagination. I've used the adhesive on my portable video player (even though I didn't like the idea of attaching something permanent on it), and it stays on very well. I can attach my player to the Gorillapod now and hang it on a lamp pole or table, and watch it with an ideal view without having to hold it in my hands or putting my head down while watching.

This product not only looks fun, but it really is a joy to use and very convenient to have. Although some may think it looks silly like a child's toy, this thing is no joke. It's so versatile. You can practically put it anywhere, except you just need to know the right "combination" (position) for the legs.

For me, the 1/4-20 screw (for cameras) clip took more effort to pull out than the suction cup and adhesive clips, but I later realized that's actually a good thing (wouldn't want a camera falling off easily if you were to forget to put it in the lock position!). Be sure to hold the "Joby" button before removing the clips. It should make a click sound when a new clip is securely placed, and then just turn the thing to the lock position. The 1/4-20 screw (for cameras) also has a rubber surface so your camera won't get scratched when screwed in; however, I've noticed some minor tears on the grip already if you twist your camera in too much or remove it frequently.

Pros:
- Very versatile. It's seriously up to your imagination/the different positions and uses.
- Rubber grips on the legs makes it perfect for securely grabbing things and not slipping off!
- Easy to lock and unlock clips.

Cons:
- The rubber surface on the camera clip may tear if you screw your camera in too much or remove frequently. (Then again, you can purchase additional clips too from Amazon. Hopefully, they will sell extra adhesive clips too)

I'd also like to see this small Gorillapod with even longer legs. I thought a beanbag-pod was unique a couple years ago, but this totally blows that one away. It's one of those products where you'll be saying "I could've thought of that..." but for it to actually be made and perform this well is a different story. I'm quite impressed and I love the Gorillapod!

Highly recommended! Please watch my video also.

5 out of 5 stars Great for what it's meant to do   July 24, 2008
The Gorillapod GoGo Flexible Tripod is a very well made and versatile tripod/device holder. It had no problems holding my Casio Exilim in a variety of ways that made for a good, sturdy, small tripod option. I was impressed with the attention to detail in the interchangeable clips and the catch/release tab that fastens the clips in. I guess I was expecting less given the size of the product.

Each ball joint was resistant enough to handle many different shapes and "poses". The suction cup seems very strong. I haven't tried anything ridiculous on it, but it does what it's supposed to do. I usually reserve 5-stars for products I LOVE, but I have no reason to dock this any stars because it does what it needs to. It's just hard to "excited" over a cool tripod.

5 out of 5 stars Great Device for the Gadget Hound on the Go   July 23, 2008
I spent more than 15-years in the broadcasting industry (radio and television). I have been teaching college journalism and broadcasting for the past 14-years. My students and I have been using the various Gorillapod systems for the past year and I can say without reservation that these little gadgets are great. It's one of those devices that you buy for a specific reason, but end-up using for a dozen others as well.

The main thing to keep in mind about the Gorillapods is to choose the system that's right for the job. This unit (Joby GP1-M1EN Gorillapod GoGo Flexible Tripod with Suction Cup & 2 Adhesive Clips) is not going to hold your SLR camera; it really won't even hold any but the smallest digital cameras.

The first thing that struck my mind when I was asked to review this unit (which is lighter duty than any of the Gorillapods I'd used before) was ""Mic Stand"". I took an EV 635-A (stick mic like an interviewer might hold in their hand). I jury-rigged a Velcro strap onto one of the quick release shoes that came with the unit and was amazed at what it could do.

It works as a table stand, a makeshift shotgun mount for a video camera. It can be hung on the rearview mirror of a car. For those "gang-bang" news conferences with 200 reporters trying to get their mic on the podium, just wrap the Gorillapod legs around an existing mic....job done.

My point here is that with a little imagination and the right Gorillapod you can make a-lot of those media support jobs you used to carry half a dozen things around to do, work with just one.

For me it's one of the few gadgets on the job that I truly wonder what I did before I had it.

P.S. Joby, make a Velcro strap attached to a release plate for this unit.

4 out of 5 stars Strong joint system on this portable tripod/device gripper.   July 23, 2008
I found this device immediately useful, it is a TERRIFIC light weight tripod for use with cameras. It is strong enough to support my fairly heavy KODAK ZD710, but not quite burly enough in the main neck connector to support my slightly weighter but tiny SONY DTR. The 6 &1/2 inch legs made up of ten ball joint connectors feel very stiff when moved (in a good way) making them more than capable of doing their job- its just not much height, so this is the kind of tripod that is great for low angle shots or macro shooting. I also found this unit useful for watching the PSP. With its finger system which grips the PSP phat in several ways all of which balance the unit for table top viewing, for IPOD viewing the suction cup/or optional adhesive connector units allow for cell phone and light weight device hanging from windows etc.. Weight limits for the various attachments are as follows.
1/4 -20 Camera screw 11.5 oz.
Adhesive clip 10.6 oz
Suction Cup 7.1 oz
these weights seem conservative as this things really is strong but a user with common sense will find when the weight feels right or is going to make the unit fail (fall). Pretty cool device that does what it promises. and is actually useful right out of the box, very little documentation on the unlock mechanism for adapter changes but it is very easy to figure out anyway.

3 out of 5 stars Form Vs. Function   July 23, 2008

The "Joby Gorillapod Go-Go" tripod is a clever little invention with attractive, unique multi-flexible legs that enable you to position it in almost any manner feasible. I tried it with my small Nokia Coolpix camera and my FLIP video camera and it works as expected. On slanted surfaces the legs can be twisted to hold your device in almost any situation. The three surface spots, or bottom of the three legs 'hold' nicely on any surface. It also seems to be very durable and is light enough that you can take it anywhere. The suction cup also is convenient for a vertical surface, but it could not hold my Nokia Coolpix camera due to the weight.

Unfortunately, the three legs cannot grasp a vertical surface like a post or a tree if you wanted a higher vantage point. To be honest, I prefer my "Sunpak 620-101D Tabletop Tripod with Mini Ball Head" to the "Joby" as it is slightly more sturdy for heavier objects (my camera) and can extend from 6.75 inches to 11.5 inches and the price is less. "Joby" is a good gift or `stocking stuffer', but its no panacea for mini-tripods.
