that Norton Utilities 8.0 can seriously damage your filesystem. I strongly, strongly recommend that users stay away from this utility. Even early reviews noted that it makes rather low-level modifications to your system when you install it; as I discovered on trying to do a defrag (a few months after I had bought my machine), it crashes (with an obscure error code) leaving your filesystem corrupted.
If you have had the misfortune to purchase this product, I suggest buying a copy of DiskWarrior, which will fix any problems Norton has caused. I didn't lose any data, but I count myself lucky.
A terrible job by a company supposedly "protecting" us. It will be a long time before I trust Norton again, if ever.
Norton Utilities sucks January 11, 2005 21 out of 21 found this review helpful
Do not buy this program. I bought this program for my boyfriend for christmas. Its not good at defragging (he had to do it twice in 2 weeks so far), and the disc utility can be harmful or even fatal to a mac computer. When we found this out it was removed right away. Also Norton is discontinuing the product and concentrating on making virus protection. Why is this being discontinued if its supposedly a good product? i promise if you get this program you will regret it.
Symantec itself has discontinued this program. September 24, 2004 21 out of 21 found this review helpful
Symantec (the makers of Norton Utilities) has discontinued this program so there will be no future development. Stay away from this faulty program and buy something better, such as Disk Warrior or Tech Tools.

I ran this software and it crashed my hard drive and deleted half of the data on my computer! It was a nightmare. All Mac users are now recommending Disk Warrier due to having the exact same problem as I did with Norton Utilities. Avoid!
