Money Plus is a joke July 15, 2008 I have evaluated Quickbooks Pro and Pro Contractor edition. I installed the trial version of Money Plus after reading that it can run concurrently with prior versions (I have Money 2002). After evaluating it, it doesn't even come close to Quickbooks for funtionality. However it would probably be ok for someone who sells Lemonade.
After installing it, I opened my prior version of Money (which has my entire life's checking history) to find out that it somehow got password protected. I couldn't figure out what the password was so I restored the prior backup. That worked fine except I had to reenter a ton of checks. Being a little po'ed about the trial version, I deinstalled it. That worked perfectly... and then some. It deinstalled my copy of Money 2002 as well! I had to restore my system to get that back and needless to say I also had to install and deinstall lots of other stuff. What a collosal waste of time.
terribly unstable/unusable July 12, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is the most frustrating piece of software I've ever used, hands-down. It has all the features I want, but it just doesn't work.
On my first computer (Windows XP), I got all my accounts set up, and they sometimes would update their balances online. Usually the operation wouldn't work ("The online update was unsuccessful"), but sometimes it would succeed. Every few months the file would get corrupted and I'd have to start from scratch. But at least I could get things to work with some effort.
On my next computer (Windows XP also), I gave up completely. Online updates *never* worked with my original file (again, "The online update was unsuccessful"). I started a new file, but I couldn't successfully connect to online services. I'd add a bank, then would get an error that it was unsuccessful. In my account list, there would be a link to "provide sign-in information". When I clicked it, I'd fill in a username/password, then get a message that "An online operation is currently in progress. Please try again in a few minutes." I would get this message even after waiting 6-12 hours, closing the file or *rebooting the computer*. This happened for all banks, in all of the *27* attempts I made at creating a new file from scratch.
For a while, I found that I could work around the problem by using Money's "Repair File" functionality after *every* account-setup and every online update. Eventually that stopped working though -- my accounts are currently stuck with new transactions that can't be accepted because... you guessed it... "An online operation is currently in progress.".
I tried all this with and without "background banking" enabled -- don't even get me started on the stability problems that this functionality (a program that ran in the background) caused.
I've been trying to use this from version 2006-2008.
I uninstalled this program and am currently using a money-management website. It has far fewer features but at least it works.
Newer versions move closer to quick expiration and online-only features June 29, 2008 I used Quicken for about 10 years. I switched to MS Money in 2004. I loved Money 2004 compared to older Quicken. I decided to upgrade to Money Plus so I could keep online updates working. Bottom line - both Quicken and Money get the job done - with a lot of frustration and questionable business practices. I would say that I don't have a choice - but I guess I do - I just prefer the advanced feature set more than I hate their corporate shenanigans, for now.
Key notes on this new version: - Yes, it seems to take forever to complete an update. It isn't doing anything either - no CPU usage, no network traffic, nada. This is lame. I use a personal firewall, and I used to be able to block Money 2004 from connecting for software updates to money (and thus expiration notes, ads, etc). With Money Plus, it seems to have consolidated the updates and quotes features, so I either get everything or nothing. It actually tries to do updates randomly while you're running the program. You'll notice that on the Update Now screen, you no longer have the "Download Money Updates" checkbox. Note that the "online update" takes up to 30 minutes even with my personal firewall disabled. - The Help/Manual is now "online-only" and isn't searchable. That really irks me, even though I know it is probably not going to help me anyway.
Other than that, I generally like the interface and reports.
As with a lot of other people, I wish MS would just charge a yearly subscription fee instead of forcing upgrades. The older versions have everything, and I'd pay the upgrade price to keep using a functioning old copy and they could have their endless revenue stream.
Money One June 27, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Money One for 2008 is a good program to purchase. It is easy to down load. I had no problems with any of the down load processing. The program works great.it is a great tool developed by Microsoft to monitor and help you control your expenses. I would suggest everyone purchase a copy of this program.
Works pretty much like Money 2007 except WPA June 10, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have been using Microsoft Money for over 10 years and have been pretty satisfied with it. I only upgraded because I was almost out of online banking time with Money 2007. After reading some of the Quicken reviews I am glad I still have Money in spite of some drawbacks.
With every new edition of Money the file size has been getting larger and larger. It used to fit a backup on a floppy disk. No more.
Some of the problems people complain about in the reviews can be solved by changing the settings. One example is of the names on downloaded transactions remaining how you put them.
I do not like the WPA feature, though. I am going to need to do a factory restore of Vista and will need to contact the Money people in order to get a new install code because you are limited to 2 installs and I put it on my laptop too.
With Windows needing restores about 12-18 months I will be in contact with Money support lots more than I would like.
