So what if you can't afford a permanent, full-time technician to maintain your PC? You can do better than that for less money with McAfee Utilities. As long as your computer's running, this software will be monitoring everything from hard drive integrity to year 2000 readiness, as well as protecting from an ever-growing assortment of viruses. The installation is spare and simple, letting you choose the options best suited to your needs; the Utilities package then starts with your machine, operating in the background until it finds a problem (or you instruct or program it to run a particular function). You'll find yourself learning more about your computer through the suggestions and options available to you. For the most part, though, once installation's over you won't know it's there--it only speaks when spoken to or in emergencies. It takes up very little hard drive space or RAM, and operates discreetly in the background while you're working--just a tiny icon in the tray reminds you it's there. If you need to undelete, "shred," or encrypt your files, the security programs included will help you sleep better.
