Generally excellent anti-virus software, but did fail to catch a zipped email that locked up keyboard and mouse. Didn't like the $39 per event to repair the virus damage.
Don't buy it - check revierws before buying Norton stuff September 23, 2004 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
Have been a satisfied user of Norton Systemworks, Antivirus, Cleansweep etc for many years - this program has completely undermined my confidence in this company.
The product activation did not come up with a valid number so I never got around to activating the program.
Too many problems - will carefully check product reviews before buying Norton stuff in the future and probably just get an alternative.
Norton should offer a full refund, or a free upgrade to an antivirus program that actually works, to anyone who bought this program.
Better than other choices..... July 24, 2004 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
I been online ( internet ) since 1994 and in all that time I only got one major virus. It was a minor one back in 2000 but at that time PC viruses were not the day to day thing they seem to be now. I was a big fan of Peter Norton since the Windows 3.1 days and when threats became a serious problem ( about 2001 ) I turned to his software. I was disappointed to learn that the company had been sold to Symantec and decided to try other solutions. McAfee was a good alternative, at the time, free evaluation period was 90 days, and the reviews were decent. Norton was about the same price but didn't offer upgrade deals at that time. The one major virus I got in all my many decades ( 1 ) of using the internet was while my PC was protected with McAfee. After the fall-out/data-reconstruction/ and a whole lot of sweat I decided to give Norton another try. So far, fingers-crossed/knocking on wood, this has not happened again. I hear/see many complaints about NAV2004Pro making the PC boot-time take longer. Why? If you want to make absolutely sure you are viri-free what's an extra couple of seconds.... and I do mean seconds. NAV2004Pro takes approx 15 seconds to boot my 1.8Ghz/512MB PC than any other choice..... 15 seconds! Geez, what does this say about people complaining? " I'd rather get a virus than wait 15 extra seconds!!! " The price-tag is a tad steep.... $69 Retail with no upgradable option. ( Previous Version ) But overall this is not only easy to set-up and maintain it also works pretty darn well. I recommended it to my parents (who are both over 60) and so far they are viri free as well.
Even free isn't worth it July 18, 2004 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
This is the second Symantec product I've purchased over the last few years. After hours on the phone with Symantec "support" and more hours surfing their "award winning" support site (who gave them this award and what were they smoking?!), I vowed never again to own a Symantec product.(...)AntiVirus may be a fabulous virus detection, prevention, and elimination product once you get it installed and functioning correctly, but doing so takes an absurd amount of effort. There is a conflict with a standard Windows XP update, so you can't even install without removing that update, installing AV, then reinstalling the update. Once installation was complete, I couldn't activate it for no apparent reason ("Not a valid A8Key"). Turns out AV couldn't get to the Symantec servers, even though I could surf anywhere else I wanted to. No solution for opening ports or anything, you just have to call for phone support (limited hours, M-F only). After 30+ minutes on hold, I had to read the product key (24 alpha-numeric chars) then write down the activation key (34 alpha-numeric chars). Now it's supposedly activated, but it's causing issues with MS Outlook, LiveUpdate won't work, the icon disappears from the system tray, and I can't launch/configure the program once the icon is gone. Solution? Uninstall and reinstall Symantec Norton AntiVirus.Avoid this product like the plague.
Thx for the problems July 18, 2004 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I cant believe the amount of trouble and headaches i have been getting trying to use this product after the 15 day trial period. WHy is there a trial period for a product you have purchased. Neither amazon nor norton has been helpful in resolving the product code issue. They pawn the problem off on the other. I have been trying to return it but have ben unable. DO NOT USE THIS PRODUCT!!!!!
