Disappointing December 4, 2006 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I'm currently preparing for the Adobe Photoshop CS2 re-certification exam. Consequently, it was with great anticipation that I looked forward to Scott Kelby's Photoshop CS2 Power Session DVD. Maybe my expectations were too high. For the most part, this isn't a terrible DVD. It runs approximately 2 hours and it gives a very basic overview of some of the new features in Photoshop CS2. I learned a couple of quick tricks and feel that overall it wasn't an utter waste of my time. It most certainly isn't on par with most of Kelby's books.
I was disappointed with Kelby's explanation of smart objects. I had the benefit of seeing a Photoshop World session on this new feature and Kelby kept his explanation much too simple. The DVD promises to have you using the new features like a pro, but in the smart objects clip he completely disregards the fact that Photoshop integrates with programs like Adobe Illustrator and that is, in my opinion, a glaring error. He also didn't show me how to create nested smart objects or the grouping feature.
I frequently felt that Kelby did not have a solidly prepared script and was simply winging his explanations. If he made a boo boo, he simply laughed it off. That approach was fine for some sections but not others. In explaining the vanishing point feature his example was poorly constructed and when he tried to demonstrate the effectiveness, he clearly lost points.
In showing the red eye removal tool, he used basic photos which could be very easily fixed. However, not all images respond so perfectly and I'm glad I've seen Deke McClelland's explanation.
I didn't see a single session on HDR, the new animation palette, variables, smart guides, new pdf presets or video preview on this DVD. There was no mention of changes made to the Print with Preview dialog box.
I thoroughly loved the comprehensive explanation of Camera Raw and the Bridge. Nonetheless, I cannot rely on this DVD to help me prepare for my exam. On a side note, this DVD will not play at full screen size - it simply became too blurry. The sound quality also jumped around.
On a rating of five stars, I give this 2-2.5 stars. Amazon is currently charging $49.99. You can purchase some exceptional comprehensive reference books for much less. Alternatively, read Photoshop CS2: Up to Speed by Ben Willmore.
Good, but consider joining NAPP instead March 2, 2006 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
Scott Kelby is president of the National Association of Photoshop Professionals (NAPP), and is one of the best-known Photoshop "celebrities." I'm a NAPP member, and as a NAPP member I get access to all sorts of video tutorials and other Photoshop tutorials, as well as a monthly magazine called Photoshop User.
The reason for saying all of this is that I have seen most of what is on this DVD in one form or another through NAPP. I grabbed this DVD from my local library because I was curious to see what's on it. It's a good DVD. It's focused on teaching the new features of Photoshop CS2. Scott always does a good tutorial, so you won't be disappointed if you buy this DVD. But consider that for a few bucks more, you can join NAPP and get all the same content plus way more (including some great discounts with various retailers and services).
