Review Written in 2008, an honest one.. April 15, 2008 I had this well over 2 years now. At the time of the purchase, it was like the best thing to have. Now it is 2008 where there are many more GPS units to compare it againt. This would be at the bottom of the list. I notice some reviews are written 2005. That is 3 years ago. You know how fast electronics change.
I have traveled quite a bit and rented quite a bit of GPS units along with the rental cars, Philly, NYC, L.A., Pittsburg, Atlanta, Maryland, Washington DC, Charlotte, NC...... This unit is almost useless in metropolitan area. Good luck using it in NYC. It couldn't even keep up with me on foot. Try it yourself.
It constantly loses signal in the city with high rises and the rerouting takes forever when you are driving. If you miss the original route, it will try to recalculate from that point on but since it takes forever, you would be driving away from the initial predicted route so by the time it finishes calculating, it needs to recalculate again with your current position. Unless you are stopped, you would have driven a few miles before getting a good route.
However, I found it quite reliable in the suburban area like Charlotte, NC where there aren't many grids of roads like other major metropolitan area. I am guessing it does not clutter up the processor of the GPS when it is rerouting since there are only a few routes to consider.
Another positive note about this unit is, the battery life is considerably high. I have used it like 13 hours straight and it still had some juice left. IIRC, they advertise some 20 hour battery life per charge, but I didn't believe that. I think 13 hours straight was pretty impressive.
I was impressed when I got it a couple of years ago because it was like one of the few available at the time, but the time has changed, there are so many GPSs out there cheaper than QuestII and outperform it in every aspects. I am getting something else.
Garman Quest 2 February 13, 2008 Sometimes a little slow in pulling up info, but other than that I like it.

Garmin Quest II Handheld GPS
I don't normally write reviews but felt compelled to comment on this unit.
I have several garmin gps', I am usually an early adapter, I understand tech. This unit is an EMBARRASSMENT to an otherwise outstanding company.
Yes I read the reviews here and other places, flashed the firmware, updated the software, deselected non-relevant maps. I then called Garmin because, compared to other Garmin units I own, this operated so poorly I was convinced there was a hardware defect.
Tech support (US Based!) was VERY helpful and finally decided to send me a brand new unit. Unfortunately that unit was just as awful.
I tried to like it. I tried to tell myself it was me. It wasnt.
Time spent with upper level tech support led to a resolution I was very happy with. The unit was REPLACED WITH A DIFFERENT MODEL. I am not going to go into the details because Garmin was very gracious when, at the end of it all, they really didn't have to be.
So: Kudos to Garmin for generally making GREAT products. This is NOT one of them, regardless of what anyone else says. Thank you to Tech support for doing the right thing. A warning to you - DO NOT BUY THIS UNIT. Get a different Garmin.
great unit with a warning October 17, 2007 Quest is a great portable unit. Just a warning to you all that after three years of use I had my first screen lock up and this happened of course during a trip navagation. Be sure to carry your map as an emergency. I fixed the lock up by unscrewing the unit and unplug-replug the two separate power-cpu connectors inside.
garmin quest 2 purchase August 9, 2007 This is a great device. You just plug it in to the car lighter, put the holder attachment to the windshied, and turn on , and you are ready to navigate. It works in the vehicle and out. The instructions are clear. it is FUN to use. Whenever i use it I find something new with it. The voice is very pleasing to the ears and the Garmin Quest is very accurate.
