Made for Two Wheels
The zumo is made for extreme durability; it's vibration-tested, waterproof, and built with fuel-resistant plastics to withstand the elements. It's also intuitive, with a glove-friendly touch screen with left-handed controls that make it easy to operate. There's a bright, sunlight-readable, UV-resistant display that makes it easy to view, as well as a unique motorcycle console for trip information, including a fuel gauge to warn you when its time to fill up. The display measures 3.5 inches diagonally and features 320 x 240 pixel resolution.

Measuring 4.8 x 3.9 x 1.6-inches (WxHxD) and weighing just 10.6 ounces, the zumo is small enough to carry with you while you're off the bike. The high-sensitivity GPS receiver is powered by the SiRF Star chipset, which offers extreme accuracy, even when you're riding under dense foliage or between tall buildings. The unit also features Garmin Lock -- an advanced anti-theft feature that disables the unit from performing any functions until you type in a specific four-digit PIN or take the unit to a predetermined location.

The zumo comes with a motorcycle mount with universal mounting hardware so you can mount it anywhere. An automobile mount is also included, and it features an integrated speaker. Garmin also provides custom caps, which are available in a variety of colors, so you can reflect your style.

Navigate the Open Road
The zumo 550 comes ready to go right out of the box with preloaded City Navigator NT street maps and a hefty points of interest (POIs) database, including motels, restaurants, fuel, ATMs and more. Simply enter a destination, and the zumo takes you there with turn-by-turn voice directions that speak street names. In addition, zumo accepts customized points of interest such as school zones and safety cameras, and it also includes proximity alerts to warn of upcoming POIs. Plus, the unit is fully compatible with Garmin's Tour Guide feature, a free utility that allows you to build and upload a database of POIs that are encoded with photos and MP3 files. A rechargeable, removable lithium-ion battery that offers up to three hours of use is integrated into the zumo for trip planning or use on foot. In addition, the zumo even accepts electronic maps, making it the ultimate off-road navigator.

Hands-Free Calls and Wireless Voice Prompts
With the zumo's Bluetooth wireless technology, you can talk on the phone safely without removing your gloves or helmet. Connect the device to your Bluetooth-enabled headset/helmet and cell phone to make and receive hands-free calls. You can even make phone calls to POIs through the zumo's Bluetooth interface. In addition, The zumo transmits navigation voice prompts to your headset so you can listen wirelessly.

Traffic, Weather, and Radio
With optional XM subscriptions and an XM antenna, you can check the weather, move ahead of traffic and listen to the radio when you travel with the zumo. As an alternative, the zumo can receive optional TMC traffic alerts (in select cities) when used with a compatible traffic receiver. Simply press a button on the screen, and the zumo recalculates your route to avoid traffic tie-ups.

Route Planning, Sharing, and Entertainment
The zumo makes it easy to plan your next trip and share routes with your riding buddies. Plan trips on your computer before you start. Search for food and fuel stops and local attractions. Then, transfer your route to your zumo and go.

At the end of the day, share your favorite places and rides with other zumo riders, and review your travels in Google Earth. SD card expansion makes it easy for storage and route sharing, and you can download routes to share with your riding buddies. You can also load MP3s onto the unit so you can enjoy music while you're riding. Plus, a JPEG picture viewer lets you share photos of your adventures with friends and family.

2 out of 5 stars BE AWARE   August 28, 2008

BE AWARE - Garmin advertises the 550 Zumo as providing high quyality MP3 music. They also promote their Bluetooth technology. Be aware that the MP3 quality through the Garmin Bluetooth technology is, at best, very, very poor. In addition, XM radio is NOT available through their Bluetooth. What Garmin does not mention is that to achieve better quality or XM radio, you need to use a wired headset (as well as a $200 separate antenna for XM). In addition, Garmin provides very limited and disappointing factory support for cell phones. Be sure to check their web site for capatibility for your particular cell phone or you may be disappointed to find your bluetooth phone is not supported. At close to $1,000 for this unit, it is simply unacceptable for Garmin to put out this product with these limitations and not disclose these limitations up front. As a navigation unit, it works fine. However, there are much less expensive units available to provide equal or better functionality for GPS. Overall, I'm satisfied with other aspects of this unit as it mounts nicely on my motorcycle and seems to be built to withstand the rigors associated with motorcycling. I pair the Zumo with a ChatterBox GRMS X1 and this combination works well except for the MP3 music functionality. Sorry - I would think twice before investing in this unit again as I sincerely believe that I haven't received adequate value for its cost.

1 out of 5 stars Seller does't know their own products   August 20, 2008

I asked the person who I spoke why there was such a difference in prices from one retailer to another. He told me that the differences where because of the different versions of the machines and that I would not be able to update an older unit with new software.

With this information I bought the unit from 17th Street Photo.

When I called Garmin they told me that there is no different versions and that any updates would be available to me after buying the unit. With this information I could have bought it from another store at a lower price.

I gave my review regarding my purchase, but after finding out from Garmin that there is no difference between years or (versions as I was told) I change my review.

The following day a representative from 17th Street Photo called me asking me to change my review for a 20 dollar refund, I told them that I would have to think about it and to call me back later.

I found this to be insulting and when they called me back I told them that I would not change my review and that in fact I was going to change my review again letting other customers know what they were doing to gain a better review, they then offered me 30 dollars to remove my review, but I refused.

I believe that people should know what this company is doing to gain the trust of customer to buy their products. If they had no stars that's what I would have given them.Garmin 010-00567-00 Zumo 550 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Motorcycle Navigator

5 out of 5 stars Zumo is the way to go!   August 19, 2008
I have owned this device for almost two months now, and find it to be a very well made product. Adding an 8 GB SD card makes it the only music player that I need for the motorcycle and the car. It's a damned fine GPS too. As usual, the mapping products supplied by Garmin leave a little to be desired, since there have been a few roads I've travelled that weren't in the maps (on four year old roads). But overall, anyone should be very happy purchasing this unit.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Product   August 17, 2008
I have bought the Garmin Zumo 550 about 3 weeks ago. I have had the power cable installed on my motorcycle by my Honda dealer and I mounted the unit myself. The GPS is most useful when riding, especially when riding to FAVORITES. It provides clear and concises directions. It also provides additional information, such as speed, time, altitude and compass directions. The screen of the unit can be read very well, even in bright sunshine. The touch screen provides the ability to change menus, volume of sound, etc. with the glove on and while riding.
For me the built in MP3 player was a most important additional feature. I down loaded MP3 files from my computer onto a 4 Gig SD memory card. This gives me about 20 hours of my favorite music. I use JVC ear plugs.

I recommend the Garmin Zumo 550 highly to my fellow motorcyclists. Buy it and you will extremly happy.

5 out of 5 stars Great GPS   August 13, 2008
Combined with the products offered from Kennedy Electronics, I was able to mount this on my Honda 94 Goldwing Trike and run it directly into my intercom/radio. I have a switch that allows me to flip back and forth between the radio and the Garmin so I can hear the output right on my speakers or through a headset.

It does everything I wanted it to do, and I will probably be purchasing a memory card so I can download some music for trips where my local radio station doesn't reach.

So far, it has been 100% accurate for all my needs and flawlessly led me to my destinations in towns I don't know at all, as well as any local places. I also use it on occasion in my car with the adaptor it came with for car use.

Very easy to install the mount on the bike, I would recommend this product to anyone wanting a portable GPS for their bike or trike.
