Garmin 270 in France May 10, 2008 I've just returned (April 2008) from 2 1/2 week driving trip to south of France - Provence to Dordorgne by way of Carcassonne - with my new Garmin 270. I've been to France and Great Britain probably 50 times, including extensive driving. However, this was first time to try a GPS. I can't imagine going to Europe again without a GPS; it was great!! And Garmin 270 proved to be good choice for me, i.e., simple, not a lot of extras I didn't need, and worked smoothly right out of the box. We were mostly in very rural parts of France, and the maps were nearly perfect - it took me on scenic rural roads that I wouldn't have picked out from a paper map - but always with good start-to-destination results. Always found a satellite pretty quickly except one time, when it searched and searched. Eventually, I turned it off, drove a couple of kilometers, then re-started, and it found the satellite quick as usual. Minor map errors mostly had to do with mis-counting the number of exits from a round-about, but likely mostly due to either (1.) a newly added round-about exit/entrance, or (2.) a minor exit/entrance that was questionable if it should have been counted. All in all, an enjoyable experience even for a person who is very familiar with driving in western Europe. 5-star recommendation.
Inexpensive option for European traveler May 8, 2008 I travel in Europe as part of my job. Historically, I have always used maps. I purchased this Garmin as an option and tried it last time there (Germany, Belgium and Lux). I chose this one as it has the European maps already loaded. My daughter has another Garmin with more options and it is easier to use while driving, but I ended up loving this unit. I preloaded a number of my locations prior to departing the US and added them to my favorites. Even locations that are not on the POI list can be added by identifying them using Long/Lat coordinates (I used Google Earth to find the coordinates and then located them on the maps using the coordinate option - worked excellently, by the way). The unit itself is simple to operate and fairly user friendly (I am a male and therefore don't generally read the manual). One option that I think would be great to add is a volume knob on the side like my daughter's. As it is now, you have to change the volume via software. The touchscreen works well. I would definetly purchase this again if needed.

Works great in the US, a big waste of time in France. In France, it didn't work at all. Wasted my time sending me in circles.
Great Size But No Way to Plot Before You Go! April 5, 2008 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
I just bought my 270 for a planned European excursion this summer and next. While it has no documentation, it seems fairly easy to use. Since I haven't gone yet, I'm unclear how it will perform in Europe BUT I already have a major gripe that it has no way (as far as I can tell, and the enclosed documentation gave no help) to plan routes before you arrive in Europe. I was trying to plan distances from hotels and restaurants, to museums and cities, and while you can see a detailed map of these foreign locales, there is no way of plotting a route!!! I cannot find a way of entering a starting point!!! This is pathetic!!! Even Yahoo Maps on my Blackberry World can do this. This is a major need to travelers that has been missed by Garmin on this device.
Great unit March 15, 2008 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
This unit makes traveling in either Europe or North America much simpler. I highly recommend it.
