Daughter May 16, 2008 My father wanted this TomTom. This was the best value on the web, and received it in perfect condition.
Leave time to return it before going on vacation May 15, 2008 I paid $30+ to have my Tom Tom One XL-S shipped to me immediately. I did this because I was flying to a vacation destination in a couple of days and renting a car to drive to other spots after arrival. Tom Tom is supposed to work out of the box. It didn't. I put it on a USB connection to my computer to charge it, to see if that would make it work. It doesn't come with its own charger -- just the USB connection and a car cigarette lighter charger. The USB connection brought it to life, but the device wouldn't accept a full charge. I called Tom Tom for help. I then tried the charging patterns they recommended, which aren't in the manual (either the little one that accompanies the product or the large downloadable PDF manual). Those suggestions didn't work either. The unit wouldn't accept a full charge. The only remedy Tom Tom would offer was for me to send the unit back to them to be repaired. That would take 3 weeks, thereby defeating my plans to take the device on vacation and flushing $30 down the toilet for expedited shipping costs. They rejected the idea of sending me a replacement unit and allowing me to simultaneously return my unit pursuant to a return authorization. So much for working out of the box. I have subsequently learned that the unit will accept a full charge using the cigarette lighter charger. I can live with that.

Overall, not a bad GPS, but there are a few quirks.
1.The voices tend to mispronounce some of the city names. Often, its more humorous than troublesome, but this also transfers to street names. This was more noticeable in California, where Spanish names seem to be more difficult. 2.The map update coupon for 30 days is almost worthless. If you've never used a GPS, or used TomTom Home, you might get the wrong idea that your GPS is up to date. On the opening screen, it will tell you that your TomTom is up to date after downloading minor changes to map sharing. For the new user, they could easily mistake that to mean the maps are up to date also. 3.E-mail support consists of a quick canned response to indicate that your message has been received, but due to unusually high number of incidents.... blah, blah, blah. The follow-up response does seem like it comes from a real human, but instead of a response, they indicate that they will "forward the message to the appropriate department for you". The appropriate department must be their survey department, as that is the only follow-up you get. 4.Maps, on a couple of occasions, were inaccurate. 5.Newer areas (1-2 years old) weren't included, but should have been. 6.Though most of the menu was easy to navigate and understand, some wasn't.
As I stated, the product, for the price, really isn't that bad, but I would rather spend a few extra to get more of what I wanted (smaller footprint, bluetooth support, etc.). I'll probably wind up keeping this as a backup system, and go with another company. I guess that a negative experience with a company tends to leave a bad taste. Hopefully, my experience isn't normal. For the GPS unit itself, I give a 4. For Customer Support, I give a 1.
Excellent product for the cost. May 11, 2008 We have used the Tom Tom XL S, all over the USA, and find it easy to use and very accurate.
OK but not great May 10, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have three navigation systems - one for each of my cars. All are different brands so the comparisons are apt. The TomTom falls squarely in the middle of the three brands. The screen size (4.3") is deceptive. While it is true that the screen is 4.3", the maps take up only about 2/3 of the screen, while the other 1/3 has some rather large and real-estate intensive text. There is no way to access the entire screen for the map, which is a disappointment for people who want maximum screen size. The color scheme is a trifle strange and is unchangeable. Time to satellite lock-on is also in the middle. Garmin is definitely the slowest, while Magellan locks on to satellites nearly instanteously. TomTom takes almost a full minute in my neighborhood.
Perhaps the most annoying feature of the TomTom is that it will NOT turn on and off with the auto engine, unlike both Garmin and Magellan. This means that the unit has to be turned on manually and turned off manually. If you use your DC adapter as a mechanism for recharging the battery, you'd best remember to turn the unit off before leaving the car; otherwise, you'll end up with a completely useless unit off charger. I don't know how many times I've needed the GPS "in hand" and found that the battery was completely or nearly discharged because I forgot to turn it off when leaving the car. The TomTom tech support people have told me that they are working on a software upgrade to make auto on/off a user-selectable feature, but at the moment this is not part of their units' firmware.
Map quality is good, but the graphical quality is ragged at best. When you compare the actual graphical interface of Magellan, Garmin, and TomTom side-by-side, there is no question that TomTom has the most poorly implemented graphics. Garmin's graphics are clearly the best; Magellan a close second.
For the price of this unit, I would have expected a better quality graphical interface. It works as advertised, but I would probably go with a Magellan unit for overall usability. The TomTom is OK, but is too expensive for what you get.
