Product Description Hawking Technology's HWUG1, 2.4Ghz Wireless-G USB 2.0 Network Adapter with removable antenna, packs the latest wireless technology into a compact unit, capable of transferring data at speeds up to 54Mbps and 108Mbps, capable when paired with the Hawking HWRGM1A Mimo Router. The external dipole antenna can easily be removed and upgraded to a Hawking Hi-Gain Antenna for extended wireless range. For piece-of-mind wireless security, the HWUG1 supports 64/128-bit WEP data encryption that protects your wireless network from eavesdropping. It also supports the WPA and WPA2 (Wi-Fi Protected Access) security standards that combine IEEE 802.1x and TKIP (Temporal Key Integrity Protocol) technologies. Client users are required to authorize before accessing to APs or AP Routers, and the data transmitted in the network is encrypted/decrypted by a dynamically changed secret key.

Worked great, then died. November 12, 2008 The good news - for the first 4 months I used this product, it worked GREAT. The external antenna is nice, the Mac drivers worked well, and the Linux Ubuntu distro I used it with setup the device perfectly. I've treated the device gingerly, and it never left my office. But then one day, I got 0 reception. The card still worked, but it became clear that the antenna connection internally must have gotten disconnected.
I contacted Hawking to ask about warranty service, and while they were very nice on the phone, since it was past the initial 90 day period they would not pay for the shipping of the product. The cost of shipping would have been almost as expensive as buying a new product, so I decided against it. In the meantime, I found a similar product, selling NEW, on ebay, for less than $18 including shipping and so far it's worked just as well. It also has the identical external antenna port. It's physically smaller too.
So while my product might be an isolated case of reliability, it is worth noting that if it breaks, the cost to ship it fix it might not make it worth your while.
Works great on both Windows and MacOSX November 6, 2008 I purchased the HWUG1 last year for my Windows-based Dell laptop. Installation was simple and painless, and it brought in stronger signals than the built-in antenna of the laptop. The real benefit, however, was when I removed the small included antenna, and replced it to a larger directional one. This boosted signal strength significantly. In fact, some wireless networks over a mile away appear to be accessible with sufficient signal strength and quality.
I recently upgraded to a Macbook Pro, which has a more powerful built-in antenna than the Dell. However, signal strength was nowhere near the one achieved through the combination of the HWUG1 with directional antenna. I decided to browse the Hawking Technologies website, and discovered the HWUG1A, which is described as "Wireless-G USB Adapter with Removable Antenna for Mac Users". Within the product support section were instructions and drivers for Mac OSX, as well as other operating systems like Linux. I downloaded the drivers for the Mac, plugged the device into the USB slot, followed the setup instructions, and was up and running in a few minutes. I had been happy enough with my old HWUG1 unit, that I would have been willing to purchase a separate model for the Mac. However, this driver download saved the the cost and trouble of purchasing another gadget. Great job, Hawking!
I'm really impressed with this little gadget. Would highly recommend to anybody who has problems with weak wifi signals.
Wireless made easy October 9, 2008 I don't know how I did it but I mistakenly ordered a Windows product for my Mac and it wasn't a problem. I went to the Hawkings website: http://www.hawkingtech.com and downloaded the appropriate software for my computer OS10.4 and it has worked flawlessly. The software was easy to install and the directions were straightforward. But what has impressed me most is the quality of the connection. It's connection speed is no different than my husbands is with his internal wireless card.
GOOD BUT NOT GREAT October 6, 2008 ITEM PURCHASED FOR LAPTOP. WITH MY BUILT IN NETWORK ADAPTER I GET 1 BAR FOR WIFI. THIS PRODUCT GIVES ME 2 BARS.
Impressed October 5, 2008 I reluctantly bought this product after having issues with the airport extreme card I bought for my G5. The Hawking box arrived with no mention of Mac Compatibility anywhere, but after customer service showed where to download the proper software the Hawking HWUG1 has worked flawlessly on both my G5 and G4. I'm very impressed!
