5 out of 5 stars Worth the extra few dollars   February 9, 2008
This Y splitter is great because of the individual volume controls. Even if you don't need to connect two sets of headphones, the volume / mute feature alone makes this worth the money.

I listen to sports broadcast via the web all the time. Most of the time, the volume is so sensitive, that turning my laptop volume up one notch is too loud, and the next notch down is too low. What's great about these, you can set the volume on the loud end, then just use the super convenient volume adjustment on the splitter.

If you're only using one set of headphones, you can mute the other line and shift all the volume to the line your using.

In summary, regardless of if you're using two headphones or one, this is a helpful convenience device.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good, But...   February 2, 2008

The idea of having volume controls on a splitter makes good sense. Individuals have their own volume preferences, and two listeners are likely to be listening with two different model headphones.

Now for the goofy part. The mute switch is not really needed. Add to the fact that the first time I slid the switch, the plastic switch cap/thumb pad detached from the splitter and went skidding across the kitchen floor...

Really folks...You've got two volume controls, you can unplug one headphone, or even take one headphone off (granted, earbuds are a bit more complex). Why do you also need a mute switch? This sounds a lot like a solution in search of a problem.

Suggestion: Center the switch, make sure both headphones work, and them use silicone glue to secure the switch in the that center position.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific for kids sharing an audio player.   January 22, 2008
This is a solid adapter for splitting an audio source for kids or for any other purpose for that matter.

This splitter worked beautifully with our DVD player on our holiday travels. I strongly recommend for air travel with kids.

4 out of 5 stars OK, but could be better   December 16, 2007

I bought two of these items. One was defective. Not a good start, but the product is not bad considering it's the only option in this price range. There does seems to be some volume attenuation, but it is barely noticeable (i.e. the volume is a bit higher when the headphones are plugged directly into the source, versus through this splitter when it is on the maximum volume. Not sure the mute switch makes much sense. Why not have installed a mute switch for both sets of headphones? I can see more application for that than the current configuration.
