mostly wonderful July 25, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have loved having this on a cross-country trip, and look forward to taking it to India and Indonesia over Christmas vacation. I only hope there are more books available soon. You have the latest mystery or novel by a good author, but not the earlier books which may be better,( and cheaper, I would think). Also, I was unable to get any wireless signal in airports in Portland or Atlanta, or on the planes, while we were still loading, and cell phones were working.
Not for Macular D or limited vision July 25, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought the Kindle for my parents. Mom has Macular Degeneration and Dad's eyes did not return to full vision following detached retinas. I thought the large print feature would be good for them and give them more flexibility in book choices than searching for large print at the library.
Unfortunately, they are barely able to use the thing. They can only turn it on/off and turn pages because they memorized the placements. The large print feature is a stand-alone amid nothing else large. They cannot read the menus, see the book reviews, order books, or know what the buttons are for. They're afraid to touch the buttons in case they get a screen they can't see and then can't get the book back.
This is a pretty cool little gadget for those who like gadgets and who have tech savvy and great vision. Don't buy it if you are thinking it will be useful for those with limited vision.
Love what it is, hate the design July 25, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
The Kindle is truly a revolutionary product that can be compared to other great breakthroughs in the production and distribution of words. I have not purchased a paper book since I received my Kindle six months ago and have no plans to purchase a paper book again. This is truly a giant step forward in terms of efficiency, economics and the environment.
That being said, the design of the Kindle itself is awful. The keyboard is of little value to me and only gets in the way. There are far too many buttons that result in accidental paging backward and forward and make it easy to lose your place. I would recommend getting rid of all the buttons, like an iPod and using the screen and soft keys to drive the device. Your really only need a couple of controls anyway. I would also find a better solution than the stiff leather cover. While this is an absolute necessity because of the design, the Kindle easily falls out and is constantly sliding around within the cover.
I look forward to a redesigned Kindle and assuming that even half of needed improvements are made, I will be the first in line to buy a new one. In the interim, I continue to be a frustrated, but committed Kindle user.
Most Important Innovation Since Gutenburg July 25, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Hey
I am not going to put anything in here that probably hasn't been said a hundred times. That being said, I think that the Kindle is the most important innovation for readers since Gutenburg created the movable type.
It is not perfect. We REALLY cousd use the ability to put books in folders to sort our books. I have had the Kindle for about a month, and I already have something like 1000 books for it. I am forced to store the books on my computer and tronfer only a handful to the Kindle, not because of space, (1 2g card can hold a virtually unlimited library) but because I can't easily get between 50 pages of books on my Kindle. With the ability to create folders, I would have something like 10 pages of folders, 1 for each author. Much nicer.
I have read many reviews complaining about accidently hitting page forward while holding the Kindle. For me, this has not been a problem. If you hold the Kindle towards the bottom, you will not hit those buttons. Also, Sleep is your friend. I have not turned my Kindle off yet. I simply put it to sleep when I am done reading.
The internet is fantastic. Could it be better? Of course. But I have free access to 90% of the internet over a highspeed wireless connection. Amazing.
I would love to see some more games become available. Sudoku or Kakuro, anyone?
Overall, I am simply astounded by the Kindle. It exceeded my expectaitions, which is incredible for an electronic device.
I now use this device more than anything I own, computer, cell phone, or TiVo.
Love my Kindle! July 25, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Honestly, I'd been looking at the Kindle for months before buying, but felt the price was a little high. What attracted me was the ability to change the font size, load enough books on that I can't run out of reading material during vacations, and not have to pack the extra weight if I'm reading a hard-back. I bit the bullet and bought it after I found a new novel I wanted to take on vacation and it was only available in a hardback edition that must have weighed 10 pounds! That's several pairs of shoes I'd have to leave behind! I've since fallen in love with reading on the Kindle -- it's small, light-weight and easy to use anywhere. It always opens my book just where I left off, it doesn't get lop-sided as I get further into the book, no folded down pages or bookmarks. I also love the ease of ordering books wirelessly and having them magically downloaded into my Kindle seconds later. The only thing that would make it better would be a back-lit screen to make it easier to read at night. Otherwise it's great!
