Map updates should be free within one year of purchase July 17, 2008 I find this to be very underhanded of Garmin. I purchased two units this year and now find if I really want them to be up to date I have to purchase current maps and I haven't even had the units 6 months!
Updated maps, but not complete July 6, 2008 The updated maps are supposed to be corrected through April, 2008, but still do not recognize a portion of the 210 freeway in San Bernardino County, Calif. through the Redlands area. This portion has been built and in existence since 2007. Therefore, the navigator tries to divert you to the 15 and 215 freeways or onto local streets to cross this stretch, and would indeed be confusing to a driver not familiar with the fact that the 210 freeway is continuous from the 57 freeway to the 10 freeway.
I purchased the update specifically to avoid this confusion, but apparently the mapping was not as up-to-date, as claimed.
Garmin Map Updarte June 27, 2008 The download of the updated map was easy. However on a recent trip from Oklahoma City to Florida, the routing took me over some pretty remote roads in east Texas. It may have been the shortest route, but it was not the most comfortable or fastest route I could have taken unless I had a Porsche Carerra.
The Only Product I've Ever Returned To Amazon! June 20, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
As I write this review, the Garmin Map Navigator 2008 Update is on its way back to Amazon for a refund. Before ordering, I checked to make sure it was compatible with my Garmin GPS -checking my model number carefully. It supposedly was. When I received the product I was instucted to load Garmin drivers -no problem there. Then the fun began... As I tried to load the program, I was instructed almost immediately that it couldn't be loaded because my GPS was "missing a prior map." Since this progam was supposed to be compatible, I'm not sure how that is possible. Obviously, the product was misrepresented. I was instructed to notify Garmin in Kansas. which I plan to do. NOTE: when I plugged in my GPS all of my saved destinations had been wiped out ( I know they are easy to replace; it's just the principle of the thing.) However, HOME became KANSAS. That would have been fine if I didn't live outside of Philadelphia, PA !! That was not an easy problem to solve. It took about an hour to figure out how to make the correction. By the way, as a warning to anyone considering purchasing this product,my Garmin GPS is a StreetPilot c340 - it states right on the Garmin Map Update 2008 that it is compatible. It also lists many other models. Unless you want to join Dorothy and Toto in Kansas I wouldn't take the chance! Donna Keller Philadelphia, PA
Garmin Update June 19, 2008 Having had the Garmin for a few years, and not updating yearly, I found the update causes the Garmin to be a bit less accurate in some situations that it was not before. For instance, some streets it showed before are not there now. Directions, once you change the units prescribed course, seem convoluted to get back on target. Nothing major, and the new display is much better, but just a few things that you miss. All in all - it is still a winner!
