4 out of 5 stars Pleased with my choice   May 15, 2008
After researching GPS products for 4 days, I decided on
the Magellan Maestro 4040. It served my needs, plus. The features are amazing and more than I expected. I especially like the fact the street names, freeway entrance and exits, ect. are spoken to you. I love this feature. It keeps you from having to look at your GPS for the street names. It's quick and accurate.

I was so happy with my Magellan Maestro 4040 that my husband purchased one too. Very handy for his business trips.

5 out of 5 stars Magellan Maestro 4050   May 9, 2008
Upon receipt of the the 4050 it was not operational. I called Magellan Customer Service and they immediately sent me a 4250 which is an upgrade from the 4050. I then returned the 4050 to Magellan. The BEST customer service I have encountered lately. This is my 3rd Magellan GPS. I tried a Garmin 650 and it does not measure up to the Magellan.

3 out of 5 stars listed in top 3 research   April 29, 2008
I did my research and this product was listed in the top 5. It mentioned some problems with locking up, but WOW is that a problem. Constantly locks up and have to reboot (seems to happen every time I don't know where I'm at!) Tested on regular routes, e.x. to/from work/home... directions were not direct routes, with free "real time reroute", did not show any construction. Not able to change preferred route when voice command "HOME". Even though placed on dash close to access, does not always "HEAR" commands and need to yell at it,(although manual says not to yell...sometimes asks me or reboots without any command of Magellan). If this is one of the top 5, I don't know if any are any good! Also, although "portable", you have to mount the holder on dash, so moving from car to car is not an option unless you purchase another unit. (I do transport of clients in company vehicle. It would be nice to have a way to utilize unit in another vehicle without it having to have a permanent mount). This is my first GPS unit and I was really expecting more after spending $400. I am a photographer and was looking for something that would allow me to get off the main roads without getting lost. Now I'm not so sure...if there was only a way to try before buying and not just go with the "experts" critiques, but it's still better than it used to be when making a purchase.

1 out of 5 stars WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT   April 21, 2008

This product is really disappointing. It has so many glitches: not always accurate in planning the best route, voice activation works about 20% of the time, the traffic kit is a joke. ok, you probably get the point...

4 out of 5 stars Good GPS, bad customer service from Magellan   April 12, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

Purchased the Magellan Maestro for a long road trip in which I intended to do a good deal of back-road driving and wanted a GPS system that could get me back to civilization as quickly as possible. The Maestro 4050 is a fine GPS system. Easy and intuitive; you can start using it right away, out of the box. It's simple interface allows you to input address, destinations, find POI's (Points of Interest, coffee, gas, ATM's) My unit came with the Traffic Kit feature and I had a hard time getting that feature activated. The actual activation has to been accomplished through the Magellan web site, you input your coupon code and the web site should issue you a activation code. The web site would not give me an activation code so I called customer service and spoke to a level 1 helpdesk employee who assured that he did not understand why it would not work but if it continued not to work I should definitely call back. I did. On the second call they bumped me to a level 2 helpdesk person who did assist me in finally activating my product. It took a few days but it did work. And after all that, I have to say that in my opinion the Traffic Kit is a feature I can live without. It only works within the limits of major cities and gives cryptic warnings about traffic conditions, often when your already in the thick of it.

In summary: The Magellan Maestro is a great GPS system, the voice recognition system works well (not perfect, and by all means don't yell at it, seriously; it responds better when you speak in a normal conversational tone.) The Traffic Kit is a good idea but doesn't provide enough insight to make it worth the subscription fee.
