Amazon.com Product Description--May 8, 2008 TomTom is going for the ultimate in portability with the 2008 ONE 130 and ONE 130S by integrating a nifty fold-out mount right into the devices. No more trying to figure out where to stash that big, clunky mount in your car -- just pop it off, fold it up and carry the whole thing in your pocket. Of course, the ONE 130 series also features the plug and play ease of use, rock-solid navigation, and sleek designs we've come to expect from TomTom. The ONE 130S adds text-to-speech to the base 130 model. This means instead of hearing "turn right in 50 feet", you'll hear, "turn right in 50 feet at Ohio Street". In our experience, this is probably the most useful step-up feature for a GPS navigator, and if your looking at the 130, we'd definitely recommend stepping up to at least the 130S. | QuickGPSfix Starting up can seem like a slow business, particularly if you're in a hurry, because the GPS receiver needs to know exactly where each GPS satellite is to calculate your location. But satellites only broadcast their positions once every 30 seconds. So if any of their signals are interrupted, for example by passing high buildings, the whole position-fixing process has to repeat itself again and again until the perfect fix is achieved. QuickGPSfix takes a smarter approach. QuickGPSfix can speed up the time it takes to fix your GPS position by downloading the latest satellite data via an Internet connection. Just connect your TomTom device to your computer and TomTom HOME automatically downloads `QuickGPSfix' - a special GPS data file that helps your TomTom fix your position quicker, even when the GPS signal is weak or partially blocked. This unique free service helps you fix your position and get navigating faster than ever. On the road or no access to TomTom HOME? Get the same `QuickGPSfix' data by simply connecting to any TomTom PLUS service, using a wireless data connection. As soon as a connection is established, the `QuickGPSfix' data is automatically updated. Note: QuickGPSfix data has limited validity. So to keep on getting a faster position-fix, re-connect your device at least once a week. To minimise the amount of data sent over your wireless data connection, this automatic update is only carried out if the data on your device is over 5 days old. The associated data usage of this service is less than 10 Kb per connection. Please contact your mobile service provider to determine the exact costs. To disable this automatic update, just select `Disable Auto QuickGPSfix' on your TomTom device.

Small, yet powerful July 17, 2008 This is my first GPS unit. I wanted a full-featured but smaller unit I could carry easily in my pocket - this GPS fits the bill. The base snaps on and off for a quick transition from the window suction mount. Very easy to set up and the TomTom Home application for updates, add-ons (voices, icon symbols, etc.) is very easy to use. I purchased it in early June 08 for right under $200 including tax and shipping. The only problem I have had is that the unit will occasionally fall off the suction mount.
Great value and a great product July 15, 2008 I ordered this TomTomOne for my 75 year old grandmother who has to drive into the city a lot for doctor's appointments. Amazon had the best price too, even when the local stores had them on sale! I got the chance to use it when I was visiting as well. It is so easy to use that she was able to set it up and start using it the day she received it. The volume is loud enought that she can hear it and understand the directions easily. It has given her a lot more confidence on the road, not needing to look for street signs that are sometimes not there or missing a turn because it will correct your course if you make a mistake. I love it and am thinking about putting it on my Christmas list this year too!
Amazon customer services is unpleasant! July 15, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Why two stars? not one? All and all the Tomtom 130 is a pretty good toy. But I made a simple mistake - ordered a wrong model. Mistake was made because of a POOR PRODUCT DETAILS information. After I received my Tomtom, and played with it for a couple of days I discovered that it is not compatible with a "text to speech" feature which I was particularly looking for. I called Amazon customer services with a question if and how can I upgrade me product for a different model with a "text to speech" feature (with paying a difference if needed). I was sent to the store that sent me my product (car toys.com). I called there, and found it not as pleasant and easy as I expected it. So I called back to Amazon with a hope to get better help (that, well known "great" customer service), since I made my purchase there. As a result I was told that I have to deal with those people on my own even if I bought there product on Amazon.com. I thought you should know what problems you might face when you buy a third party product using Amazon.com
Not the same as a map... July 13, 2008 The TomTom has some strengths, but as a map junkie, I find that it has some weaknesses. It will get you to the destination, but may sometimes make "interesting" choices in planning your route. This might be because it appears to be changing its "mind" about the route as you travel.
I have just tested the TomTom on two trips - one from Iowa to Michigan, returning through Chicago IL with a stop there, and another from Iowa to Georgia returning through Huntsville AL.
The TomTom was invaluable in helping us locate a shopping mall in Huntsville, immediately upon our arrival there. Finding phone books has become more and more challenging as phone booths disappear, and so GPS technology may be the real solution for this specific kind of wayfinding.
I find it is sometimes inaccurate about the true distance to turns, and this can be misleading, especially in urban areas with closely spaced intersections. The "S" model reads the names of streets for turns -- this feature is worthwhile.
Also, in crossing urban areas on interstate routes, I would find it helpful if it had a menu choice for "rush hour" that would select beltways in preference to routing straight through the city center. It could be that one of the existing menu choices will do this, but if so I have not yet discovered it.
Overall, it is a good tool, but not a replacement for a decent map or atlas.
poor choices July 13, 2008 TomTom ONE 3rd Edition 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Vehicle Navigator My biggest complaint is lack of instructions, plus it seems to be hung up on national interstate highways and round about routes to get to them.
