Not as good as previous model October 14, 2008 I only had my original TomTom for about a month before it was stolen, but I was generally happy with it. I replaced it with their newest model, but it does not seem as good as my first one. Why do I say that? The routing choices have been poorly selected. On a recent trip (145 miles) where I knew essentially where I was going, I just could not get the unit to focus on the best route which was an interstate highway as opposed to a crooked parallel state highway with only two lanes. After several alternatives were explored, it did OK for a portion of the trip but inexplicably flipped me back to a crooked state highway. This weekend, the unit selected similar set of completely inaccurate choices, both leaving and returning. I was leaving an address near Cincinnati, OH and the Appalachian Highway (SR 32) to Athens, OH, a trip of about 100 miles.TomTom ONE XL 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator with Maps of the U.S. and Canada The Appalachian highway is without a doubt the best and most direct highway and it four lane all the way, but the TomTom selected a number of crooked two lane roads that would have added substantial time to the trip. When I was less than 20 miles from my home, the unit selected another crooked two lane choice that would have added many miles to the trip and would have sent me in an easterly direction when I needed to stay on a northerly path.
To be fair, I made a trip to Columbus recently with a complicated path and the unit did a good job. I am left to wonder if the unit can do a decent job for an urban environment, but just cannot plot longer trips on priority highways.
I have found this to be a consistent problem. As such, I recommend another GPS unit other than a TomTom.
TomTom XL S October 9, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
We purchased TomTom XLS 08/02/08 for a trip to Canada. Many time the GPS did not know where we were. Just yesterday I was going to see a family member in Indianapolis. She lived at the same address for about 3 years but street not in GPS. I called tech support and was told street on their new release but because I owned GPS more than 30 days I would have to pay for a new map $119.00. I feel like I was ripped off.
Excellent Buy October 7, 2008 Have been most pleased with the TOM TOM ONE XL-s. Was a great time saver in finding my way through rural, south Virginia to a road race course in the middle of nowhere! Highly recommend this unit for most basic, auto, GPS needs. Plan to buy a friend one for Christmas!
TomTom Really New? September 8, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
The Tom Tom I bought as new was missing seval excessaries. Company said they would send them. I'm still waiting. The Tom Tom made a noise when removed from packaging. Contacted Tom Tom Company, They requested I send it to them. Since one area of the Tom Tom was missing a cover over an area, They indicated that the unit might have been a refurbuished unit and not new.
For those whom say it doesn't read street names... September 8, 2008 I just purchased the tomtom one xl-s (the unit itself only says xl not xl-s, BUT when I power it on, it says xl-s on the opening screen) and was going through a lot of trial and error with it. Some say that it doesn't say street names; I was having the same problem. I found out that you have to use the 'susan' "computer" female voice only, not in combination with the 'human' voice because if you do that, it will not read the street names. If you use susan all by herself, she reads the street names. The xl unit does not read street names but the xl-s does. Go see the chart on the product page here and it will show you that. I've also been going through heck trying to see if this thing "dings" when you're about to make a turn; for this price, it should have all the bells & whistles!
