Very good unit... not water tight June 14, 2008 It's nice. Good battery life. Nice screen. NOT FOR GPS ROAD NAVIGATION without special expensive software. It is ok for taking into the rain. Not good for boating... especially in salt water.
The Magellan tech support and warranty replacements are really very good. This is a good basic unit.
The interface could use some work though. Takes some getting used to.
Unfortunately I Am Disappointed April 27, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this for nearly $300 a couple years ago. It was toward the top of the Explorist line at the time. Amazing how much the price has dropped. From day one satellite acquisition was very slow. Often only picking up a few after several minutes. Being my first GPS, I assumed this was somewhat normal. After reading more GPS reviews I realized this was not normal. Magellan customer support was basically nonexistent when I tried contacting them several times.
Now after two years of gentle use, the GPS will not acquire a single satellite. I have tried everything I can think of, including a complete memory erase and a firmware update. Still nothing. This GPS is now an ugly plastic paperweight. And it has ruined a fun weekend of geocaching (treasure hunting, as they call it) with my kids.
Maybe I got a lemon. Which I could understand. Although there are far more negative reviews of Magellan than some other GPS brands. Makes you think. But I consider the utter lack of support from Magellan the biggest issue here. I hate giving negative reviews. And I am pretty easy to impress. But I just cannot recommend this product.
Good enough to buy August 15, 2007 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I agree with other reviews. This unit is totally useless unless you buy additional mapping software...and a memory expansion card. So consider that in the overall purchase price. My unit from Amazon came with a map software purchase coupon for $9.99 (this offer may be expired by now). Battery life is excellent Backlight is excellent. (has two levels of brightness) Satellite tracking is excellent (I typically track 9-10 even in the woods. There has only been two times when I lost tracking and then I was in a deep ravine with almost total tree cover.) Display is good. Grayscale...I keep on high resolution all the time. Makes for a slight delay in zoom speed, but resolution benefits outweigh speed issues. For those of you who may chicken out and buy a model 200 or 100...buy this one. You will need the expansion card option. My advice...download the entire owners manual from the Magellan web site (PDF format) and study it well. Then begin to play around with this unit. Get involved in Geocaching too. It will help you learn more of the features faster. I have also used this unit for a travel GPS. Signal remains strong even inside a mini van. I don't really have a "CON" to write about this unit. It is a great "first purchase" GPS. Durable, fits in pocket, and good controls.

I really like my GPS July 19, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have had this unit for four months now and have not had any problems with it. Some of the things are not very intuitive so you have to read the manual from time to time, but after you get used to them, the unit works very well. Accuracy seems to be very good. I have dropped it on concrete and had it skid across the sidewalk and it came out unscathed. I use my receiver for geocaching and it works really well for that. I have not tried using it for finding roads or addresses or anything like that.
