Amazon.com Product Description
The venerable Garmin 60CS just got a whole lot better. The 7.5-ounce GPSMap 60CSx now features an insanely accurate, high-sensitivity GPS receiver by SiRF that tracks your position even in tree cover and canyons. Plus, you get a bright, sunlight-readable color TFT display and an included a 64 MB microSD card for storage of optional map detail. Add all that to the 60CSx's integrated barometric altimeter and electronic compass, and you've got a unit that is ready to take you anywhere on land or sea.

The 60CSx is a refreshing upgrade of the 60CS, and features a removable microSD card for detailed mapping memory. View larger.

The device features the powerful SiRF GPS navigation chip for supreme accuracy in all conditions. You also get an electronic compass and a barometric altimeter.

You also get a large color TFT display and turn-by-turn routing capability.
You can use the 60CSx's memory card slot with preprogrammed microSD cards from Garmin (sold separately) that provide topographic maps, city streets, and nautical charts. In fact, the unit is compatible with most Garmin MapSource products including BlueChart, City Navigator, U.S. Topo 24K, and U.S. Topo and Recreational Lakes with Fishing Hot Spots. The unit comes preloaded with an Americas autoroute basemap that provides automatic routing capabilities including highways, exits, and tide data. There's also a preloaded marine point database. You can even get turn-by-turn directions when you're driving, and an integrated trip computer provides odometer, stopped time, moving average, overall average, total time, max speed, and more.

The 60CSx's 2.6-inch, 256-color TFT color display is designed to present mapping and trip information clearly and accurately in any lighting conditions. Plus, the case is lightweight, rugged, and water resistant to IEC 60529 IPX7 standards (can be submerged in one meter of water for 30 minutes). When using two AA alkaline batteries, you'll get up to 20 hours of battery life from the unit. The unit's barometric altimeter system features automatic pressure trend recording while providing current elevation, ascent/descent rate, minimum/maximum elevation, total ascent and descent, and average and maximum ascent and descent rate. Meanwhile, the electronic compass allows you to get accurate headings while standing still.

Another key feature of the 60CSx is the 10,000 point automatic track log; 20 saved tracks (500 points each) let you retrace your path in both directions. There's also a large-numbers option for easy viewing, as well as a dual-position display mode.

The 60CSx's trip computer provides odometer, stopped time, moving average, overall average, total time, max speed, and more. Meanwhile, a fast processor allows the 60CSx to provide quick auto-routing, turn-by-turn directions, and audio alerts when you use the optional MapSource software, which can be stored on the unit's included 64 MB microSD card. Downloading information is quick with the USB or serial port interfaces. Using the dedicated serial port, the 60Cx can share navigation instructions with repeaters, plotters, and autopilots. The four-position rocker pad and dedicated high-use buttons make navigating through the unit's features easy, even when your fingers are cold or wet.

Finally, the GPSMap 60CSx is packed with some extra fun features. An integrated outdoor calendar provides ideal hunting and fishing times, plus moon rise/set/location information. There is a dedicated geocaching mode for those of you into the hot GPS community treasure hunt game. Finally, there are indoor/outdoor GPS games to help you and your friends enjoy the outdoors.

If you like the features of the 60CSx, but don't need an electronic compass and a barometric altimeter, check out the Garmin 60Cx.

4 out of 5 stars Great product   May 14, 2008
It is a great GPS device for anyone who loves outdoor activities. I use it for hiking and biking purposes. With the right kind of maps you can use it for navigation in the cities also. It comes with only a base map. Base map is a very low resolution map. When you are buying this device you might want to consider buying a set of maps that suits your needs. Garmin makes several maps. If you are an outdoor-sy person you might want to try out TOPO maps from Garmin. They have a good TOPO maps for all of US. Also, they have higher resolution maps for national parks and some state parks. City Navigation maps that Garmin sells would be ideal for using this device in your car. It is not as good as some of those other Garmin GPS units that are designed for navigation in cities but will do the job. One of the best things about this unit is the speed with which it can catch the satellites and get a fix on your position. On a clear day, it would get a fix in a couple of seconds after you turn the device on. It gets a fix even when I am sitting in my living room! The software that comes with the unit (on the CD) is just a waypoint and map manager (you have to get maps separately). That software, called Mapsource, can be used to manage several maps that you may own - like TOPO USA, TOPO 24K, City Navigation, etc. Mapsource software is useful and intuitive. It does not need a lot of training or help to use. Software on the device is also intuitive. It comes with a manual although I never had to use it.
A couple of things missing that would have fetched this product 5 stars from me:
*Maps: I think this device should come with maps. If not detailed topographic maps, it should at least come with a better basemap.
*Mapsource software: The software that comes with the device is a trip and waypoint manager. Although the software is intuitive it could be better. The software is for PC only. This software is available for Mac computers also (download from their website, still in beta) but managing maps is not an easy solution with Macs. You first have to buy Mapsource maps for PC, put them on PC, download a PC-to-Mac map conversion software, convert the maps into Mac format, burn a DVD and then transfer those maps to Mac. I think that needs to be fixed.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent choice!   May 14, 2008

I bought it thinking it would be very big and heavy GPS, but when I have it my hands for the first time it sorprises me, it's actually compact and incredibly light! It also has many off the chart functions like calculator, paragliding configs, moon charts, cool games, etc.

For me it's a Excellent choice between price and functionality!

5 out of 5 stars Can't beat this GPS for the price   May 11, 2008
I bought this GPS 60CSx to use on my motorcycle along with the RAM mount and I have to say that I'm very happy with it. I loaded up a Topo map and a Metro Guide on it since I already had those from a previous GPS (etrex vista) and this GPS works great, way better than my old one. The color screen makes a big difference and it has a slightly bigger screen also. It redraws maps much faster and is easier to use. The electronic compass is much better also as you can now see what derection you are pointing without having to move like I had to with my old one. The learning curve on this was much less than on the etrex vista, very user friendly. For the motorcycle, the RAM mount is better than expected. I can adjust it so the GPS is right in front of me and easy to get at. For the motorcycle (a lot of off-road riding) I give it 5 stars. However, if you are using it mostly on-road, I'm sure there are better GPS's for that intended use. Bottom line, it can't be beat for the price for an off-road GPS.

4 out of 5 stars So far so good.   May 11, 2008

I have had my unit for only a month and it works extremely well. It picks up 8 to 12 satellites and is accurate to about 11 feet. I have down loaded tracks and waypoints to aerial photos using some free software and they are dead on. I even get excellent results with the GPS sitting in the front seat of the car. I use it professionally to map forestry and other projects. It works great. I have not tried the navigation or other features so I can't comment on them.

The only down side is that I need to use third party software to down load tracks so that I can use them in my GIS programs. (ArcView and Manifold). Garmin should provide this with the package. It would make life easier and probably increase their sales to professionals. If you need the free software, go to the web and seach MSDNR Garmin (Minnisota Department of Natural Resources). Download the program and read the help file. It is not too complicated and works just fine.

5 out of 5 stars excellent product!   May 9, 2008
My friends got me into geocaching, and they both had this unit so i figured it was a good place to start. After reading all the reviews, it definitely stood out as one of the best units, and after buying it, it is undoubtedly an excellent product.
My ONE complaint with this unit, is the 30 character limit on the notes. In today's day and age where you can buy the micro-SD cards in gigabyte sizes, there really is no excuse for that.
Otherwise, i have absolutely no concerns or problems with this unit. It is easy to use, and solidly built.
Definitely a recommended unit!
