The SY20C6144-A's 20-inch color picture-tube monitor can be operated via its built-in main panel or via an included remote control. Protected by a durable metal cabinet housing, this monitor includes four DIN/BNC (Bayonet Neill-Concelman) composite video inputs, and four RCA audio inputs. The SY20C6144-A monitor displays date/time/camera and features single or twin PIP viewing options, full-screen or PIP auto-sequence display functions, and a digital freeze with a 2x zoom. The SY20C6144-A's monitor runs on 120-volts of AC power, achieves a horizontal resolution of 380 TVL (TV lines) with 720 x 480 effective pixels at up to 30 fps (frames-per-second), and has an operating temperature of 41 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit.

The four cameras that come with the SY20C6144-A utilize 0.25-inch color CCD (charge-coupled device) image sensors with 3.6mm fixed wide-angle lenses. Powered from the monitor via their connecting cables, these cameras achieve a horizontal resolution of 330 TVL with 510 x 492 effective pixels, and can receive a usable picture at a minimum illumination level of 0.5 Lux for low light-condition viewing. Constructed of durable white ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) plastic, the SY20C6144-A's cameras come with their own 63-foot connection cable allowing you to install them virtually anywhere, and can operate in temperatures ranging from 14 to 122 degrees Fahrenheit.

The Sylvania SY20C6144-A's built-in time-lapse VCR utilizes a dual azimuth four-head rotating helical scanning system that provides a resolution of 250 horizontal TVL in color, and 300 TVL in black-and-white recording. This unit operates on the NTSC color TV system, includes four selectable audio recording speeds, 14 selectable video recording speeds, and features a long-life ball-bearing Capstan motor that provides 250 to 800-percent longer life than standard time-lapse VCR's. The SY20C6144-A uses a standard BNC (Bayonet Neill-Concelman) video input/output connection, a standard RCA audio input/output connection, and includes an alarm input/output connection as well.

Lux rating is the measurement used to indicate how sensitive a camera is to light, and stands for the level of light reflected off a piece of paper by a candle from one meter away. Thus a sensitivity of three would mean a camera could generate an acceptable picture of a piece-of-paper-sized object that was illuminated by the equivalent of three candles from one meter away. The lower the level, the better the camera's ability to work in low-light conditions. The camera's resolution should be greater than or equal to the resolution supported by the system's recorder or monitor. The S/N, or signal to noise ratio, is an important measure of a camera's quality. A poor camera, low-light conditions or poor wiring causes "noise" which consumes processing power and disk space. A camera with a wide dynamic range is ideal, especially for recording areas in which both indoor and outdoor light are present. CCD (charge-coupled device) sensors provide high-quality images that are less susceptible to noise. CMOS (complimentary metal-oxide semiconductor) sensors offer less image quality, but are usually more cost-effective and energy efficient.
