 Does what it was designed to do .... October 7, 2008
I took a recent 400 mile trip in to West Virginia from Virginia and this unit alerted me several times ... with enough time for me to check my speed and adjust accordingly. I picked up a moving police car coming up on my rear several minutes before the police car caught up with and passed me. So, in my opinion, for the money, it's a good unit. TWO things I do not like: I'd like to have a visor mount and I'd like to have a straight, fairly long power cord. For this reason I give the detector a 4.

I purchased my Cobra XRS-9840 a few weeks ago and had high hopes because of the great price. I was very disappointed after using it for several days, it didn't work at all.
1) The sticky velcro was a horrible idea. It fell off 100 times after strategically placing it in different areas of my windshield.
2) The screen is tiny. I do like the blue LED on the black screen but I don't like that the detector is so big and bulky and the screen is small.
3) I programmed it correctly and it still barely picked up anything. When it did pick something up, it was a grocery store or drug store, NOT ONCE did it pick up a patrol car.
Complete waste of money.
My advice : Go with a Beltronics. This is what I have now and for almost the same price it is much better quality.

The Cobra 9840 has plenty of features that are good. The only major problem is the lack of radar sensitivity. Not close in comparision of other brands of units such as the Whistler pro 78 or xtr 690. Both are within the price range of the Cobra while offer much better performance and detection range. Check out the others before buying the Cobra brand.
