Amazon.com Product Description Get 2.4 GHz power with digital spread-spectrum technology in a stylish and affordable design with the GE 27700GE2 cordless phone. Say goodbye to static-filled conversations and dropped words with this high-powered phone with a sleek, modern look. This GE cordless phone takes advantage of the higher-frequency 2.4 GHz range of the FM radio spectrum, opened to cordless phones only in 1998. A 2.4 GHz cordless phone like the GE 27700GE2 is basically an FM transmitter/receiver that uses shorter wavelengths so radio waves encounter less interference. The 2.4 GHz range is also far above the range accessible to most scanners, so there's less risk of eavesdropping. When you add digital spread-spectrum technology to a 2.4 GHz cordless, you get the best security and clarity currently available. Based in part on a concept invented by 1940s screen actress Hedy Lamarr, spread spectrum transmission switches rapidly from frequency to frequency at random. A DSS signal needs less power and encounters less interference. The GE 27700GE2 automatically switches between 40 channels in the 2.4 GHz range to find the best signal, while the Secure Voice scrambler adds another layer of security by encrypting the phone signal. It also includes an easy-to-use 20-number memory and a page/locator feature that enables you to find the handset when you've misplaced it. The backlit keypad makes it easy to dial a number in the dark, and handset volume control allows you to adjust the volume as you talk. Indicators on the front of the phone's base light up when you have a voice-mail message waiting, when the phone is charging, or it is in use elsewhere in the house. With the latest technology, advanced phone features and an affordable price, the GE 27700GE2 can't be beat as an introduction to 2.4 GHz DSS cordless power.

Short use phone February 5, 2004 I bought this phone less then a year ago and when I first began to use this phone it worked perfect, I could even use the phone untill the end of my street. I could go to the neighbors house and use my own phone, I could go get the mail, and there was no static at all, I could hear perfectly. Then not even a month with my new phone and I started noticing static when I would go to far from the base (like 2 houses over) which was never a problem previously. It just kept on getting worse. And know less than a year from when I purchased the phone, it is totally worthless! The buttons barely work and to dial some of the numbers I have to push extremely hard. Everytime I step outside to get the mail or even just walking to my driveway, the static gets so bad that I can't even here the person on the other line. Then I have to hurry up to get closer to the base of the phone. It was a great phone when I first got it, so if you tend to buy a new phone every three months or so, then this is a good phone but it just doesn't last. So if you want a phone that will work great for long period than I don't recommend this phone, because this is not that kind of phone.I hope that my review helped anyone that may be considering this phone
Don't Buy This March 1, 2003 If you value your time on the phone like I do you would not buy this phone. I made a grave error on the day when I purchased it. I have had this phone for about a year and it is terrible. If I leave the phone on the charger for a weekend or a week while I'm out of town and I come home and have a good dish session with my girls (about two hours) my phone is dead. My phone dies at least 50 times a day. I don't even have to tell my friends anymore they can tell when my phone is going to the graveyard. All I have to say about this phone is R.I.P
not a bad buy... January 2, 2003 ...have had this phone about 6 mnths. now and it has performed flawlessly; heck, it's even been dropped a few times and still works fine. Pretty beefy phone,(looks & feel), compared to others in that class and a worthy buy for the price.
Good phone; batteries impossible to find June 28, 2002 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I was fairly happy with the phone until the battery started to die, about 18 months after purchase. I have yet to locate a replacement battery - the phone isn't even listed in most battery websites' product listings.

The GE 2.4 GHz phone is a fantastic purchase. The headpiece is larger than most others on the market and it fits nicely on a shoulder. The reception is quite clear and the extended range is a nice feature. Also, the added security with the DSS is comforting.
