This radio also features a channel scan for locating active channels, an auto squelch for filtering out weak signals, and a vibrating alert for use in both quiet and noisy environments. This unit provides High, Medium and Low power settings so you can choose to maximize transmission distance or save power, and a VOX function with selectable levels for voice-activated, hands-free transmissions. The GXT800 also includes keystroke tones, a roger beep that confirms transmission conclusion, and a silent operation for quieting beeps, tones and alerts when you can't afford to make extra noise. Midland's GXT800 radio is constructed to be water proof to JIS4 specifications, so it can be used in virtually any environment, and has a keypad lock to avoid accidentally changing the radio settings. This radio runs on a Midland 4.8-volt rechargeable NiMH battery pack that can be recharged while in the radio, or can be powered by four AAA batteries during extended trips. Nice radios but no 26 mile reception July 17, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Nice radios but forget about 26 mile reception, i like the feel of the radios and the weather broadcast is nice.

Excellent Product. The communication is very clear. More clear than my cell phone. I was not able to get a lot of communication distance, but I do live up in the hills where even cell phone service can be touch and go. I was pleased to find that the provided batteries were already charged when I opened the package.
Powerful and well made radios June 21, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought these radios for use by the administrator of our condominium to keep in touch with maintenance personnel. We are very pleased with their performance. The radios are well made and powerful. Unlike many who buy radios, we are not interested in long distance communication but communication with employees working inside heavily reinforced concrete buildings. We have experienced no problems in this regard. The administrator in her office can communicate with maintenance employees working in 3 story apartment buildings a quarter to half mile away. These buildings are overbuilt if anything, using concrete and rebar. If the radio can penetrate those walls, it should be able to penetrate almost anything. We also have a couple of the earlier GXT600 units and they work well, too.
26 miles? Are you sure? June 4, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have buyed this 2 ways radio by reading the comments here in amazon. It doesn't worth the price, the max distance it can achieve a real comunication is like 2 or 3 miles. 26 miles may be in direct view and near a lake or something. I still prefer the Motorola radios!
Awsome 2 way radios May 30, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
After lots of research I decided on a pair of Midland GXT800VP4 radios. I think I chose right and they seem to be well built and fairly good range. I can talk to my Brother in law that lives 1.5 miles from me and over a mountain. That's about as far as I need to reach. Switching between channels is my only con as it's alittle tougher than others I've used. But after getting used to it, that con is ok. Overall I'm pleased with these radios.
