Amazon.com Product Description
The Midland LXT440VP3 22-Channel 20-Mile GMRS 2-Way Radio Pair Pack with Rechargeable Batteries and Charger represents the state-of-the-art in high-tech engineering, for a compact package that is big in performance. Skillfully constructed with the finest components, the Midland LXT440 is built with all solid-state circuitry mounted on a rugged, printed circuit board to provide you with reliable and trouble-free performance for years to come.

The Midland LXT440 radio provides you with 22 GMRS/FRS (General Mobile Radio Service/Family Radio Service) UHF channels, and up to a 20-mile range in open territory. In addition to the 22 possible channels, the LXT440 comes with 121 privacy codes to lessen interference or eaves-dropping, as well as all 10 NOAA weather channels and a NOAA weather alert function. These powerful radios have an easy-to-read backlit LCD display that shows status information at a glance even in difficult lighting, and a large easy-to-use keypad on the front for one-touch access to important features.

The LXT440 radio is full of features such as an outgoing call alert to notify your intended receiver of incoming traffic, and five incoming call alerts to identify various senders. This radio also has a channel scan for locating active channels, and an auto squelch for filtering out weak signals. This unit provides both High and Low power settings so you can choose to maximize transmission distance or save power, and a VOX feature for voice-activated transmissions. The LXT440 also features keystroke tones, a roger beep that confirms transmission conclusion, and a silent operation for quieting beeps, tones and alerts when you can't afford to make extra noise.

Midland's LXT440 radio is constructed to be water resistant, so it can be used in most any environment, and has a keypad lock to avoid accidentally changing the radio settings. This radio runs on a Midland 4.8-volt rechargeable NiMH battery pack that can be recharged while in the radio, or can be powered by four AAA batteries during extended trips. This unit also includes a battery life extender function, as well as a low-battery indicator so you never get caught offguard without power. The LXT440 comes with a speaker/microphone/headset/charging jack so you can use it with an external speaker or microphone, or a pair of headphones, and recharge your battery pack when not in use. The Midland LXT440VP3 pack comes with two radios, each with a belt clip for convenient carrying or hands-free use, as well as two rechargeable NiMH battery packs, an AC wall adapter, and a dual radio desktop charger. These radios are even backed by a manufacturer's three-year warranty.

3 out of 5 stars 2 way Radios   July 23, 2008
On the Midland LXT44D 22 Channel 20 mile GMRS 2 way radio, it works really great, except that we've only been able to talk about 3 miles apart. I think perhaps if you were in the salt flats of Utah, or the flat land of Kansas, that you would probably get closer to the 20 mile talk range. Where we live it is a combination of flat and hills. There is excellent voice clarity.

3 out of 5 stars Good Quality - Low Power   July 7, 2008
I bought these for use with the AVP-H3 headset to use for our videography service. Communicating on the job in close proximity is clear and interference free. Inside, as in a hotel or other multi-level structure you lose nearly all efficacy. Cannot penetrate between two floors of a hotel.

Do not believe any of the distance ratings on GMRS radios. If you need any of these things to work more than a few hundred yards line of site, then buy professional business radios. These are low power consumer models...but very high quality.

4 out of 5 stars Great Value   April 20, 2008
bought this for my family to use on a Disney cruise. worked great all over the ship and from inside the stateroom to about 1/2 mile off the boat. security channels worked great even though a lot of two way radios were in use. Compact & durable, I like the rechargeable NiCd or four AAA optionm, lasted all day on a single charge. Battery gauge is bogus, shows full charge up the second it runs empty. Charging system is not intelligent so you have to monitor charge time to preserve battery life and peak charge capacity. Estimate the range in urban areas is about 1 mile, what more do you expect for $40. bought it here from Beach Audio, got it surprisingly fast. good volume and clarity. a bit more complicated to set up than I expected so you need to take the time to understand and teach others how to operate it.

4 out of 5 stars Nice walkies   February 15, 2008

The reception is very good, I used in big mountains while skiing to talk to my wife and had no problem. Even using it in "LOW" power it worked very well. That's one thing you need to be careful, using it in "HIGH" power consumes the battery really fast, making it necesseray to recharge everyday of use. Otherwise it lasts around 5 days.

4 out of 5 stars Midland LXT440 22-Channel 18-Mile GMRS 2-Way Radio   September 27, 2007
I bought these with a pair of Midland AVPH2 mic/headphone sets to use for motorcycle-to-motorcycle communications. High-end motorcycle units can cost $250+ per motorcycle; my complete purchase for two bikes was far less than one of those high-end sets.

I'm satisfied with how the setup works. With transmit power on low we still never lost each other's signal. Batteries lasted for a couple days of on/off use and still hadn't died. Clarity was good. My only complaint is I could have asked for a little more headphone volume, but I don't know whether to blame radio or the headset for that.
