The best network media player I've tried June 26, 2008 the Roku M1001 is the best network media player I've tried yet, and I've tried owned several in the last 10 years... 2 different Philips streamium units, a Turtle beach audiotron, 2 different Rio Receivers (old school), xbox 360, directv receiver...
the Roku played with my TVersity UPNP server right out of the box without incident or any special configuration. The display, while minimal, is easy to use and effective.
The only complaint I have is about the base. I wish it was permanently attached (the roku keeps rotating itself because of the ethernet cable I have plugged in). Otherwise it works well and even better than I expected!
I wish I could give it zero stars June 2, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The Roku Soundbridge is a VERY buggy product. I live in a condominium in which many neighbors use wireless internet. The Soundbridge will frequently (and without warning) switch to a neighbor's network. Correcting this problem involves re-keying in my wireless key, one character at a time with a scrolling selector, and restarting the unit.
For this reason, I now use the ethernet connection. The problem here is that if the unit detects a wireless signal ANYWHERE, it connects to it and disables the ethernet connection.
The only way I have found to avoid this behavior is to reboot the unit while placing it in a large metal toolbox, which sometimes blocks the RF signal from my neighbors. Even this strategy requires many (25 or more) restarts of the unit. Even when it is functioning correctly, the unit will switch to a neighbor's wireless network every couple weeks, leaving me to go through the above-detailed process.
Technical assistance is non-existent, and Roku refused to exchange my unit under warranty for the above-described software defect. You would be well-advised to avoid this product.
Works great with internet radio and media servers April 15, 2008 Hi,
I use this player both with internet radio and media server (Linksys NAS200) - perfectly compatible. Excellent audition, you will not regret it.
Good product , terrible support April 12, 2008 I purchased this product after another wireless pc to stereo device from Logitech failed after 1 week. The reviews from this site mostly supported this product, therefore I felt safe to purchase one.
The internet radio is nice and that part works rather well.
I have never been able to get the pc to stereo part to function, and the main reason is that I cannot get any response other than a few cursory remarks from there tech support. The manual was terrible and only refers you to an internet forum for help. The e-mail help ( there is no tech support phone number) takes several days to respond and the responses were cursory, not detailed, defensive, and just not helpful.
So basically I have a nice internet radio and bunches of songs that still must be transfered to CD to play on my home internet system. It would be nice if Amazon would better screen their products and at least rate them for technical support prior to offering them to the public.
works flawlessly April 10, 2008 The thing worked exactly as promised right out of the box, which is amazing considering it had to connect to my wireless router, etc. The best part is that it requires no additional software on the PC; it works with Windows Media Player (or iTunes, but I don't use iTunes)...there's no documentation for Windows Vista but it works perfectly with Windows Vista on my system. The streaming Internet radio works really well too, and the browser interface for saving favorite channels is intuitive and very cool. All in all I'm shocked at how simple it was to set up. The product documentation is really good too; not translated from Mandarin by 12-year-olds like lots of this stuff is. This thing has taken me past playing music through my computer to some new thing; it's a great leap forward.
