Amazon.com Product Description
The Waterpik WP-100 Ultra Dental Water Jet is clinically proven to be more effective than floss for healthier gums. Most dental professionals recommend brushing and flossing to keep your teeth and gums their healthiest. Unfortunately, nearly 80-percent of Americans don't floss on a regular basis, and most people find flossing to be a painful or unpleasant chore. Finally, there is an effective alternative to flossing that feels great and is simple to complete.

Waterpik Ultra delivers water pressure of 10-90 PSI and 1,200 pulses per minute.
The Waterpik Ultra goes way beyond flossing to keep your gums their healthiest. Waterpik has designed the WP-100 to deliver a water pressure of 10 to 90 PSI with 1200 pulses per minute. This system delivers a clinically proven combination of water pressure and pulsation to remove debris and bacteria lodged deep between teeth and below the gum-line -- three times deeper than brushing alone. In addition, it massages and stimulates the gums to improve circulation and help promote strong and healthy gums. The Waterpik Ultra is so effective that it is clinically proven to be up to 93-percent more effective than flossing at reducing gum bleeding -- a key indicator of impending gum disease.

In fact, there are over 50 published clinical studies that show the Waterpik Dental Water Jet provides significant oral health benefits, for people who wear braces, have diabetes, and have mild to moderate gum disease. That's why Waterpik is the most recommended brand by Dental Professionals. In addition to healthier gums, there is nothing better than the clean, refreshing feeling you'll get after using the Waterpik Ultra. While floss can often leave your gums bleeding, swollen and generally beaten up, the WP-100 makes your mouth feel great. Waterpik guarantees healthier gums in just 14 days. If, after using the Ultra for two weeks, your gums are not healthier, or if you are dissatisfied for any reason, then simply return it for a refund -- no questions asked.

3 out of 5 stars Effective, but Durability is Questionable   July 19, 2008
This Waterpik Ultra Water Jet replaces a WJ7B Conair Interplak Water Jet.

The Conair lasted two years, I replaced it with the same model, and the new one lasted only a week. I liked the old Conair (that's why I re-ordered it) because it had a low price, a very strong pulse, extra jets (my spouse used it also and they can break), and a reasonably small footprint. Although the new one was the same model number, it failed in one week for the same reason that the old one did after two years -- the pump tried to push water but couldn't, at all. Fortunately, Amazon refunded my money and I ordered the Waterpik Ultra.

The Waterpik Ultra has about the same footprint as the Conair. I didn't like that the price was almost double of the Conair, it came with only two jets, and the pulse wasn't as strong as the Conair. Nevertheless, I liked it because it works despite the lower pressure and it is more quiet (the Conair vibrated and rattled a lot on the bathrooom vanity).

Unfortunately, the first Waterpik Ultra I ordered lasted less than a week. Like the new Conair, it made a loud humming noise but couldn't pump any water. Fortunately, Amazon replaced it without any fuss (I am very impressed with Amazon's refund/replacement policy that includes free return shipping using their label). The replacement arrived more quickly than Amazon's original shipment, which I think is nice because I was stuck without a Waterpik while I waited for the new one. The replacement has worked a few weeks as of this review. I hope this one lasts a few years. If not for the first Waterpick that I had to replace, I would have given this product 4-1/2 stars.

By the way, I also recently purchased from Amazon a Panasonic EW1270AC portable water irrigator for traveling. (I also bought one about a year ago for my daughter for use at college.) Although the Panasonic is not as effective as the Waterpik for regular use, which I would not expect of a battery-operated product, it is pretty good for the intended purpose.

5 out of 5 stars Healthier teeth and no more floss   July 18, 2008
The machine does as it advertises to give you healthier teeth/gums than if you were using floss.

To those of you having trouble with the pause button sticking and not coming back up, try running a 1:4 vinegar:water solution through the reservoir, all the while repeatedly pushing the pause button. Mine was starting to stick, so I read something about running vinegar solution through. After one run with the solution, the pause button very nearly stopped sticking altogether.

5 out of 5 stars Pleased with the purchase   July 18, 2008
I am pleased with the Waterpik. I like its compact size and doesn't take up a lot of space on the counter. This is my first Waterpik so cannot compare it to others, but for one or two people's use, it seems to work well.

4 out of 5 stars great dental maintenance tool!   July 15, 2008
I find flossing to take too much time, and this water jet is a great time saver to help keep my gums healthy. One drawback is that food tends to stick on my teeth easier when eating since using the waterpik.
Another note, the handle started leaking little by little and finally became unusable after 6 months of use. I went on the waterpik site and contacted customer service. My replacement part was promptly processed, and I received it in about two weeks, no problem.

5 out of 5 stars Waterpik Ultra   July 14, 2008

I was interested in this product for its deep pocket cleaning abilities. After reading other reviews before purchasing, I would say that they are pretty accurate. The jet is VERY strong (especially at the 10 setting) but the water reservoir does deplete quicker than comfortable. However, this is not that big of a deal in my opinion as since I don't have much counter space, refilling only on "extra-cleaning" days is more preferred to me than a unit with a reservoir twice or even three times the size.

As for the leaking rubber grommet, it is also true. It is due to the fact that the water level is higher in the wand than at the grommet so that when you put it away the residual water eventually settles down and leaks out at the grommet. However, I want to note that the water doesn't spill out and over onto the counter. This is because the grommet is inside the basin area that you insert the water reservoir into and is sort of designed to catch drips. I have found that if I simply hold the wand down into the sink area for a few seconds after I'm finished and while I am dumping the unused water out of the reservoir, excess water will leak out of the cleaning tip so that when I replace the wand back onto the unit, no more water leaks out of the grommet. Yes, this is an extra maintenance step, but really no big deal. After all, I am already spending lots more effort cleaning my teeth.

My bottom line is that this unit does what I need it to do most which is to produce a strong jet of water. The fact that the water hose retracts so nicely, this thing seems like it will last a while, and that the unit looks quite stylish overall to me is well worth the $50.
