Can't live without it, not easy to live with it May 12, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I love my Kindle, it finally lets me read gutenberg texts in bed. I can deal with it being ugly and the controls being oddly located (which can be adapted to.)
My biggest (only, really) problem is how bloody slow it is. Everything takes forever: waking from sleep should be just about instantaneous, instead it waits for so long with no visible reaction that I sometimes hit the buttons again in case I missed the first time (which usually results int it waking, then immediately going back to sleep again.)
Where this becomes unbearable is page turning: how CAN it take so long, when it's a simple text file in solid state memory and the device does no formatting to speak of? I don't mind the black flash but I hate, hate, hate taking more time to flip pages in an electronic device than a paper book, and the small screen requires turning pages a lot more often than a paper book as well! Flipping through a book looking for something is just not doable, and the (you guessed it, slow) search function is NOT a replacement. If this is the fault of the e-paper display then sorry, they're just not ready for prime time yet and I want an LCD that works.
I need this thing and I wanted desperately to love it, rather than struggling to live with it. At present, I try to press Next Page a few lines before the end of the page, which is even more annoying when I go too early. I sure hope this can be fixed by a firmware update, because if not I'll probably wind up junking it (I can't in conscience sell it for much, with the disclaimer I'd have to give and once a usable version is available) and spending way too much AGAIN.
Wonderful, but NOT FOR READING IN THE DARK May 11, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Yes, I know it clearly states there is no backlighting, but I just assumed (insert old joke about assuming here...) that computer stuff lights up. I specifically wanted this device so I could read in the dark without a light. I've tried every book lighting product there is, and none seem to work all that great. I was shocked and disappointed when the Kindle was no more visible in the dark than a piece of paper.
Oh well, that said... in every other way it is just fantastic. I love everything else about it. The book cover didn't stay on too well, but I fixed it with some velcro. Now it's great. I can't really add anything that the other hundreds of reviewers haven't said, but if I had read this review, I may have stuck with paper for awhile longer. But now that I have it, there is no way back.
My Kindle Review May 11, 2008 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
Great product. I am thoroughly happy with my purchase. There are just a few things I wish were on there that are not. A backlight so I can read in the dark without attaching my booklight to it, a little clock somewhere on the screen all the time, longer battery life.
It was worth the wait! May 11, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I love my new Kindle! I am almost done reading my first book on it, Duma Key. The size of that book alone prevented me from buying it in print format and lugging it around - on my Kindle it was manageable! I am a frequent flyer and the Kindle has simplified my reading habits. No more leaving a book behind because you are almost done with it and don't want to carry 2 books for the trip. No more buying a full-priced book in the airport because you forgot to bring a book.
I keep my Kindle in my purse so I can take advantage of down time everyday. It is very convenient.
The reason I didn't give it a full 5 stars is soley due to the design of the buttons. The first few times I started reading I was pressing buttons all over the place! Whoever designed this thing gave it absolutely no thought or testing. I hope the next version deals with that aspect.
Won't replace the book, but would buy it again! May 11, 2008 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I've owned and used the Kindle since the first batch.
In short, I'd buy it all over again, but I don't think it will ever replace the book!
The Kindle does serve a purpose for me as a reader, but not the same reasons a book does. There is nothing like the feeling that you posses a work or the feelings of being possessed by the work that a book offers. No matter how hard I wish, the Kindle just doesn't do this for me. I'm not sure why, but seeing and feeling the book as a complete object in my hands is more desirable than having an all-in-one mobile library. These are not mutually exclusive, but as a Kindle user I am finding that if I have the choice between the physical book or the electronic version I am buying the physical book for the reasons aforementioned.
My ultimate wish is that Amazon would move to a model where you get a Kindle version of any physical book you buy. I'd even be willing to pay a small additional fee for this feature.
