5 out of 5 stars Added Info on Multi Region Hack   September 28, 2008
I bought this Philips 5140 and it is an excellent DVD. BUT----the 138931 "hack" did not work for me at first. The list of regions did not
come on screen after several careful tries. Then I shut it off for a while, and let everything calm down, then turned it on again----much like a re-boot of a computer. Tried the hack again, exactly as before and TAH DAH! It worked..

So if the hack doesn't appear to work after several tries, turn the DVD off for a few minutes to let it clear itself, then try again.

3 out of 5 stars YES, this is multi regional even if Philips says no   September 13, 2008

Thanks to Gavin R. Jewell "BigHairyScaryMonster" who linked us to H.A Emet review. We couldn't play our European DVDs on this machine. We called Philips who told us (two different reps) they don't make multiregional machines. Searched the comments and found the way to make it multiregional. Thank YOU!! It works now. Can't wait to finally watch my DVDs.
This is what H.A. Emet wrote for all of you in the same predicament that I was in.
To make it region code free follow these instruction:
1. Turn on the unit
2. Open the loading tray
3. Press the "Setup" button on the remote
4. Navigate to the "Preferences" page using the right arrow key
6. Press the down arrow once to enter the Preference page
5. Enter 138931 on the remote
6. You will now see the current region code displayed
7. Use the Up/Down arrow keys to select the region required or "0" for all regions
8. Press the "Play" button on the remote

Happy watching.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect 10   September 9, 2008
I was hesitant to purchase a DVD player online for all the obvious reasons, but multi-region/code free DVD players are not available in my area. We already had the DVD's from Australia and without this machine we couldn't watch them, so I had no choice. I was pleasantly surprised at the slimmer shape because it fits in smaller places. The remote is small and easy to use, the directions are simple and it's lightweight. The picture was so amazing that it prompted me to get rid of my other DVD player and put this one in our family room for everyone to use.
It's definitely the smartest purchase you can make.

4 out of 5 stars Great DVD player for the price   September 8, 2008
I really like this DVD player, as it plays most anything. The only flaw is there is no resume feature if it goes into sleep mode and shuts off. You have to start from the beginning and fast forward. The worst thing is the remote. The design is awful and causes you to move closer for it to work. No resume, and no open/close. But a good player for the money.

5 out of 5 stars Good Buy   September 2, 2008
I had tried other manufacturers, but they "died" after a few uses. I am now able to watch a DVD from the UK anytime I'd like.
