Durable backup for Mac. July 21, 2008 This drive is basically plug-and-play for Mac. I backed up nearly 5 years of data, including all the data from a 1 year old law practice. It took over a day for Time Machine to finish using Leopard on a G4 Powerbook, but the data files I dragged and dropped restored instantly (7200 rpm is faster than my internal hard drive). It's also very sturdy. About two hours after I set it up and started Time Machine, a girlfriend accidentally knocked it off my desk. I had visions of all sorts of problems, but it seemed fine and has been working fine since. So, I'm impressed.
The base is stable and, at least on mine, snug enough that it won't come off if I pick up the drive from the top, so it's easy to move around. It's also very quiet, so it doesn't irritate me when I'm working next to it.
The only issues that I have are that it is pretty big, I don't think it looks all that cool, and the light is shockingly bright. My home office is in a corner of my bedroom and it will keep me up at night if I don't shut it off. These are so minor to me that I still give it five stars. The price is good compared to comparable devices.
Gets the Job done July 19, 2008 Using the drive for time machine backup with OSx Leopard. Only issue is the bright front light - I had to cover it with tape. I use firewire interface.
Just what I ordered July 18, 2008 I ordered this drive for backup/scratch space for my Mac mini running OS 10.4.11. It came promptly, it installed and connected perfectly and easily, and it works great. I use the USB 2.0 interface; it connects fine and is fast enough for my purposes.
External Hard Drive July 5, 2008 No problems at this point....500GB for the price is great....I use it for my Leopard Backup...I also partitioned it in order to install a copy of Leopard on it...Everything worked fine....A good purchase for me...
Works FINE but is NOISY June 24, 2008 I use this as a backup drive, so it only turned on during backups. I have Windows XP home edition, which recognized the drive immediately on turning it on. I had to reformat the drive to NTFS for Windows using the instructions provided with the drive. Setting up was very easy, however the reformatting took close to two hours. The drive is reasonably fast for a USB based drive. I have been using it for over two weeks now without any problem.
However, the drive is very very noisy. I have never heard a drive make so much noise before. So that makes me skeptical about its life. Also the always on bright white light in the front can be annoying to many. The fact that it has to be turned on and off by a switch every time can be problematic to those who want to use the drive all the time and not as a backup only device.
The build is reasonably strong and does not give way on plugging in.
