Amazon.com Product Description
For the person who needs access to their digital content away from home, at work, or online, while also allowing that same content to be shared in a secure setting, look no further than the Seagate Free Agent Pro Portable Hard Drive. This powerful portable hard drive delivers high-speed transfers, while also giving you the ability to share content with others safely and securely from a remote location or even online.

Powerful storage device with a sleek new design.

This hip-looking hard drive takes up less room on your desk than an ordinary stapler.

Share your content with others safely and securely.
With up to 1 Terabyte and an ultra-slim design for a clutter-free desktop, your FreeAgent Pro external hard drive helps keep you safe from goof-ups by automatically saving new versions of your content that you can easily access if need be. And should something happen to your PC, you can roll back your Windows operating system, settings, and applications to a point in time when they ran smoother, like before a virus attack. Even though the system settings are taken back in time, updates to photos, music and critical data files are kept current.

The Free Agent Pro is also ideal for those who want quick and painless transfers of their data from their computer to their drive, and from their drive to online accounts (such as Shutterfly or email). Simply plug it in to any power source and connect the USB cable to any computer, and you're ready to go. This hip-looking hard drive takes up less room on your desk than an ordinary stapler--1 x 3 x 5.2 inches (H x D x W)-- giving you more space for your other desktop items. Meanwhile, the hard drive only measures 7.5 x 1.4 x 6.3-inches (H x D x W) and it matches its small base.

High Speed Synchronization and Sharing
The Free Agent Pro data mover automatically duplicates and moves selected content from your hard drive to multiple locations, such as copying your contact lists and emails to your iPod, or photos to a Shutterfly account. This feature also allows you to move your entire 'My Documents' folder to the Free Agent, or move it to your own online space where you (or others you choose) can access it from any browser 24/7. The Free Agent software also offers the feature of rolling back your system to better time if something should happen to your PC while automatic revisions of your content help keep you safe from goof-ups.

Move files or other content with either USB 2.0/eSATA/FireWire 400 allowing a maximum transfer rate of 480Mb/sec for USB, and 3Gb/sec for eSATA, while delivering a high performance spindle speed of 7,200 RPM. The unit also comes with a sophisticated touch point power on/off switch.

The Free Agent Pro software and drive formatting works only with Windows, but the drive can easily be reformatted for a Mac with OS X's Disk Utility. This portable hard drive is also compatible with Windows Vista (as well as Windows XP and Windows 2000), allowing you to backup your content regardless of operating system upgrades. A five-year warranty is also included, giving you complete peace of mind. Now with the ability to take your data with you anywhere you go, your digital content finally has room to breathe.

What's in the Box
FreeAgent Pro data mover drive, Free Agent software (preloaded) and electronic documentation, USB2.0/eSATA/FireWire 400 interfaces, USB 2.0 cable, FireWire cable, AC power adapter, and a quick start guide.

3 out of 5 stars Cut corners on interface   October 6, 2008
Everything looks great about this drive except the interface, as I just found out. I've been a Maxtor OneTouch guy for 4 years, which has a great USB/FireWire interface. But this FreeAgentPro cut important corners. It has a 4 pin and a 6 pin FireWire ports, and eSATA and USB ports. It comes with a 6 pin to 4 pin FireWire cable, so you have to hook it up that way. When I tried to daisy chain a portable FireWire drive into the 6-pin port, it turns out that the two power pins are not connected, so the drive can't be powered through the FireWire port. So, I had to move the LaCie Rugged drive to the Mac Mini's FireWire port, and attach the FreeAgentPro through a USB cable. For maximum performance I like to stay FireWire all the way, but the FreeAgentPro's interface prevents this here. Also, the power switch doesn't work --- it's just a place on the plastic case, not a switch. I would have stuck with Maxtor except the last one I bought, now made by Seagate, had a drive that crashed. Thank goodness I got it through Costco with their return policy.

1 out of 5 stars Unlucky twice   October 2, 2008
I ordered this drive to recover data from another drive that had gone bad. I partitioned it into 3 partitions and recouped some of the lost data off my bad drive. Two days later, two of the partitions failed. I ordered a replacement and the same thing happened with the replacement! I partitioned it into 3, all seemed fine for a few days, then two of the partitioned failed. I called Seagate tech support. We could find no explanation for what had happened. I returned both drives. I need a replacement now, but it will NOT be a Seagate.

4 out of 5 stars Good service, good hard drive   October 2, 2008
Hard drive exactly as advertised. I have not loaded the backup software that came with it.
Minor drawbacks are the lack of a power switch, the cheesy yellow light bar and the fact that it might be easy to knock over and break - beats me why they don't make a case that lets the drive sit horizontally.
Having three types of interface is a major advantage. The warranty is longer than most.
Loads of space and, when I get a computer with eSATA, it will be really fast.

4 out of 5 stars great, but with one big exception   September 30, 2008
Purchased this particular drive for two reasons: capacity and eSATA interface. Capacity will serve me for a long time. However, upon installation Windows did not detect the drive using the eSATA to eSATA cable I purchased separately from SATACABLES.com. Works super using USB, albeit transfer rate is much slower, of course. Why settle for advertised USB 480MB vs eSATA 3GB transfer rate? Exhausted Seagate knowledge base attempting to resolve my eSATA detection problem - no help.
Sleek, attractive unit, small footprint, very quiet. Have to place hand on drive to determine it's operating.
The drive runs slightly warm, but not hot like I've heard from other users. Tip: external cooling comes from placing the drive next to my ATX case side fan. Another reason may be because this drive is the latest generation FreeAgent Pro series, series 11 I believe.
Also heard complaints about the on/off button when I read user product reviews. Granted the switch is a bit tricky, one having to use patience (tapping top of head while rubbing belly), but I experienced little trouble turning on/off. After the first day I decided to leave it on cuz I don't shutdown my system anyway (schedule all backups, software updates, malware scans at night). That being said, initial data backup from all my internal drives took awhile. Subsequent backup times aren't an issue since I'm sleeping, so what the heck.
The owner's manual is sparse. However, once hooked up, Windows recognized the drive (USB in my case), the drive preinstalled software wizard easily steps you through the setup procedures.
Setting up the Memeo AutoBackup function was a no-brainer. All backups are performed reliably each night.
I welcome feedback from any respondents who have a solution to my eSATA detection trouble. Even tried a friend's eSATA cable in case mine was defective - no go. But I haven't tried hooking up my drive to my friend's system. Supposed it's possible my mobo eSATA port is inoperable.
If it weren't for having to settle for USB vs eSATA, I would have rated this drive 5 stars. And the purchase price was attractive for 1TB capacity.

I have had nothing but problems with this 1 tb drive which is unusual since I own several smaller ones. This is my second exchange both had different problems the first made a grinding noise when I plugged it in, dead disk The second one worked fine for a while and when I had it filled, the drive turned into a RAW drive and my data was lost. it was also making a clicking sound and freezing my system. I checked to make sure it was not my system, computer etc but all other externals worked fine. (e sata and Firewire)
I do not want to worry about my backups, I'm going to get a better drive and put it into an esata case. You get what you pay for, this is junk.
