Don't buy it or you will regret the day you did. July 6, 2008 My WD MyBook Essential Edition 400GB drive just took a dump about 1 1/2 years after I got it. (Just after the warranty ended.) The drive totally failed.
This is a replacement drive I received from WD. It was a replacement for first one I had that would periodically corrupt data.
I wish I never purchased this drive. Don't be fooled by WD's promises of a quality product.
BEWARE July 3, 2008 I purchased a previous version of the My Book series and after having disk corruption twice it died completely after less than 2 years. All data lost. Has Western Digital improved its reliability in these newer drives? I doubt it, and I'm not willing to risk it. Read up on other review sites and discussion forums, there are tons of complaints about Western Digital's drives failing. If I were you I would shop other brands. An unreliable drive is not worth owning no matter what price you get it for.
Hard drive failed completely after 14 months July 1, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I purchased a Western Digital 500 GB My Book in May 2007, had it installed on my home network and last month (06/2008) it totally failed without reason or warning. My only options at this point are to pay for some extremely expensive data recovery ($1,600) or accept the loss of several years worth of pictures and documents. Needless to say, I am furious with this device.
So far so good. July 1, 2008 Have had it for a month. Didn't use it often but so far so good. No problem to report yet.
Fast, quiet, reliable June 30, 2008 I had mixed expectations for this drive. I have an ultraportable laptop with a relatively smalle drive, so this was meant to be my data drive when the laptop is docked, to be used ongoing and not just for backups etc.
I have my itunes library on it as well as most of my large docs. It works perfectly and feels as if it's a part of the machine. Highly recommended.
