Amazon.com Product Description Garmin's nüvi 260W combines the thin profile and attractive price point of other nüvi 200-series GPS with directions in real street names and a wide screen that lets you see more of what's around you as you drive. Garmin's line on the device is that, "the nüvi 260W gives consumers the most sought-after navigation features, while eliminating many of the premium add-ons. The result is a PND that simply gets you from point A to point B - reliably, efficiently, and with style." As with all nüvis, you get Garmin reliability, the fast satellite lock of a high-sensitivity integrated receiver, a slim, pocket-sized navigator with a gorgeous display, detailed NAVTEQ maps that lets you search by name for more than 6 million points of interest like stores, restaurants or hospitals, and an easy, intuitive interface. Which nüvi is Best for You?: Click here to see a quick, simple comparison of features for all Garmin nuvi GPS navigators. Wider screen lets you see more of what's around. Compare these actual size views of a 3-inch (diagonal) screen and a 4.3-inch diagonal widescreen | The nüvi 260W comes preloaded with maps for U.S., Hawaii, and Puerto Rico, and features an ultra-slim design. | Text-To-Speech The text-to-speech feature of the nüvi 260W means that device automatically calls out street names (saying "turn right on Main Street" instead of "turn right in 200 feet."). This feature lets drivers keep their eyes on the road while navigating through busy traffic and tricky roadways. See More of What's Around The 4.3-inch backlit widescreen touchscreen on the nüvi 260W gives you 70% more actual screen area than a 3.5-inch screen. Primarily this translates into a better view of the area through which you are driving. This is especially useful in showing you what parks, restaurants, ATM, gas stations, etc. are nearby, or in letting you know whether a detour is a good idea. Also, the device itself is larger, meaning controls on the screen are more widely spaced and somewhat easier to push. Smart, Powerful Design The nüvi 260W is built with a high-sensitivity GPS receiver for extreme accuracy, as well as an SD card slot for storing your media and additional navigation tools, and a USB interface for loading data. All this is wrapped up in a package that measures 4.8 x 2.9 x 0.8 inches (W x H x D) and weighs just 6.6 ounces. The nüvi display is touchscreen-enabled, making it a cinch to control the device with your fingertips. A rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides up to five hours of battery life depending on use. Garmin Lock Garmin's patent pending theft prevention system that disables the unit from performing any functions until the user types in a specific 4-digit PIN or takes the unit to a predetermined secure location First Rate Map Data The nüvi 260W comes ready to go right out of the box with preloaded City Navigator NT street maps, including a hefty POI database with hotels, restaurants, fuel, ATMs and more. Simply touch the color screen to enter a destination, and nüvi takes you there with 2D or 3D maps and turn-by-turn voice directions. Garmin gets its map data from NAVTEQ, a world leader in premium-quality mapping. In addition, the nüvi 260W accepts custom points of interest (POIs), such as school zones and safety cameras and lets you set proximity alerts to warn you of upcoming POIs Important note about map updates: Due to our high volume of sales, almost every Garmin portable GPS navigator sold by Amazon.com will come with the most recent map version. If you ever do need a map update, you can purchase one from Amazon.com at our Garmin Store. Easy To Use Interface Garmin's interface is a key to their success and one of the things that makes their devices such a pleasure to use. Simple controls and sub-screens make it easy to enter or search for destinations and get data about your trip. Where are the satellites? July 23, 2008 This unit takes a very, very long time to find the satellites. On a recent trip to California, I sat in the rental car for 15-20 minutes while the unit searched for satellites. I must say that it worked perfectly once it was in touch with the satellites, announcing every street name and turn. If I missed a turn it recalculated my route very quickly, I never got lost. It was a minimum of 10 minutes every time I turned it on for satellite communication.
Very good poduct, but fairly basic July 23, 2008 I've had my 260W on a long trip now. Nice display, enough detail, and good local directions. I found long routes a little frustrating since the chosen route wouldn't always be the one I would choose because of known congestion. Only stores one waypoint ("Via") for a destination. Not able to download routes, trips or waypoints. I wasn't ready to invest in more features without trying out the technology. It does whet my appetite for a more capable GPS. Excellent for basic navigation.
Great Product July 22, 2008 Bought it, plugged it in and took off on a 2400 mile round trip. Absolutely no problems. I found it very intuitive as I didn't even bother to read the manual. I'm sure it does more than I used it for, but as a navigator it was terrific. Glad I paid a little extra to get the voice guidance model - nice to be reminded when turns are coming up. Only complaint is that the price dropped 2 weeks after I bought, but I guess that's the way it goes with electronics. Highly recommend.
Amazing, but don't loose common sense July 21, 2008 Bought this prior to 10 day driving vacation, and it was worth it. Amazing technology and it did get us out of a couple binds where we would have been lost otherwise. Used and enjoyed the "points of interest" feature much more than thought, in selecting restaurants, fuel and lodging. Glad I got the 4.3" screen with all the features of the 260W, and don't need all the other features of more expensive units.
Also, the suction mount that comes with it works great and I didnt' find distracting. For me, glad I did NOT get the bean bag mount.
Reason for the 4-star is the directions that came with the unit are very vague as to all the features. Had to learn by trial and errror, and even by accident. Also, doesn't always take you most efficent route, but it does get you there. It is just a computer after all. Frustrating when the route you want to go does not concur with its route, and it trys for MILES to get you to take U-turn. Probably way to remedy, but haven't figured out yet. All things considered, would get again.
Nuvi260W Very Good July 20, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This was an upgrade for me from the C330. This unit finds satellites much faster when first turned on. Garmin will be the first to tell you all the things that are great about this unit, here are a couple things I would like to see improved 1-Voice street names only pronounced in one voice "Jill" 2-I get really annoyed with the redundancy of the voice command, i.e "Turn right in 200 ft" ....... "Now turn right" ..... And the infamous "Recalculating!" 3-I really believe someone programmed sarcasm in the voice when she says "Recalculating!" 4-Would like to see food/gas/etc icons on the screen as you travel. Touching them would bring up description like Magellan, Garmin should consider adding. 5-I don't like the UNIX style of navigating menu screens. If you want to get back to the main screen, you must enter a series of "back" commands rather that moving to the main screen in one option. To get to food POIs you must touch screen 4 times to get there and 4 times to get back to the map if you don't select anything....this is a pain while driving. 6-When keying an address the machine should default the city/state you are located; instead you must input this data every time you enter a new address. 7-2009 load maps are really poor in NC (Winston-Salem to Raleigh) 8-Custom POI with warning messages do not always work correctly. Sometimes they are late and sometime not at all. However, they never seem to work unless the POI is on your direct route. It would be nice to be notified if your custom POI was on the up coming exit. (I recommend POI Factory.com) 9-I really like the interface with google map where I can send a series of address directly to my devise before I take the trip.
Hope this helps you in your decision.
