4 out of 5 stars Stable tripod and easy to use   July 12, 2008
I bought this tripod for use with a Nikon D80 and a Tamron 18-250mm zoom lens. I also wanted to do a lot of macro photography and so wanted one that was easily adjustable and very stable. No complaints on either point after 4 months of use. Be aware that the center post is NOT removable such that you can attach a ball head to the tripod itself; the ball head must be attached to only the center post. This prevents the tripod from going to very low levels with the center post in the vertical position. You can move the center post to the horizontal position, but some stablility is compromised in that arrangement. I use a Bogen 488RC4 ball head and am very happy overall with the set up. I store both in a Manfrotto padded carry bag (MBAG80P)and the combo fits in the bag very nicely.

5 out of 5 stars Seems fine so far   July 6, 2008
It's my 1st good tripod and I've only had it a month, but it worked well the few times I've used it for close to the ground nature photography. I had to return the original purchase after a week because a spring on one of the leg angle adjusting tabs broke. I was very impressed with Amazon's exchange policy that immediately generated a new order for me as part of my online return request. My replacement shipped the next day and was received promptly. I purchased the Manfrotto 488RC4 ballhead to go with it. I have found this tripod very steady and like the fact that there is a bubble level on it, and that the legs will allow it go flat to the ground. The pivoting center post easily goes into the horizontal position and back into the vertical when you are done. So with the legs flat on the ground and the center cloumn horizontal, your camera is only up several inches off the ground. When horizontal, I always have the ballhead end of the center column in as close as possible to the top of the tripod for the best support. So far I've had no problems with stability using a Nikon D300 and 24-70/2.8 lens (about 4-5 lbs. total), or my older film camera with lighter lenses, in this way. The weight hasn't bothered me as of yet, and the tripod seems well built. When you register your tripod online with Bogen Imaging, you get your warranty extended to 5 years. Very satisfied to date.

5 out of 5 stars 055XPROB Pro Tripod Legs Rock!   June 19, 2008

Just a brief review here: Having demoed the 055XPROB at a local camera store, I made the decision to purchase it because of both its sturdiness and flexibility. Ease of use was an added benefit. So far, it has exceeded my expectations. I added a Bogen-Manfrotto 322RC2 Horizontal Grip Action Ball Head which adds to the versatility of my setup. I shoot a Canon Canon Digital Rebel XTi with a variety of medium sized lenses, for comparison. In summary, I think the 055XPROB is perfect for the prosumer: durable, versatile, reliable, and affordable. Hope this helps!

5 out of 5 stars Great Tripod   May 10, 2008

An excellent tripod in every manner possible. Although it is a little heavy to carry around it certainly does the job. I also purchased a manfrotto 322RC ball head for the tripod and the combination is super. I highly recommend this tripod

4 out of 5 stars nice solid tripod   May 4, 2008
A bit on the heavy side, but for the money, that has to be expected. Otherwise an excellent choice. I had to return one of the $100 Manfrotto tripods because it was not stable enough for my nikon d300, but this unit can handle it.
