2 out of 5 stars Decent stand, but cheaply made   December 14, 2007

Just ordered two of these stands last week, and they came in yesterday. When I opened the boxes, both of them were broken in the same spot. The part where the leg spreaders attach to the bottom of the center support is made of plastic, and both were broken. One was completely broken, thus giving no support to the legs at all, and the other was cracked, and on the verge of completely breaking. Apparently the plastic used is very brittle. The only thing I can imagine as a cause would be somebody dropping the boxes on their end, causing the center column to slide down and push against the plastic mount, causing it to crack. Well, needless to say I was quite disappointed. But, instead of going through the hassle and added shipping expense that comes with returning a defective product, I just decided to use some epoxy to glue the plastic mount pieces back together on the completely broken one, and reinforce the cracked plastic on the other one. So far, it looks like it will hold, but I can assure you these will be the last ones I ever buy. I guess the old saying, "you get what you pay for" really holds true in this case. My gut was telling me $39 for a 10' air cushioned light stand was too good to be true. I should have listened to my gut. Save yourself the money, and look elsewhere for a light stand. Judging by the quality of the Photoflex umbrella adaptors I bought, I will probably buy their stands as well.

5 out of 5 stars Great portable stand!   December 6, 2006

This is a great portable light stand. When I say portable, I mean you can run around an event with one of these, or move it around a studio set with ease. This stand is amazingly light, especially considering it can extend to ten feet. This portability, combined with a light flash, means you'll be more versatile with the ability to move portrait locations to anywhere, anytime. The air cushioning is a mixed blessing, as it helps on setup and adjustment when you have some weight at the top, but also slows you to a crawl when you try to collapse it.

PROS:
+Lightweight build
+Extends to ten feet, which is great for large group shots
+Light build look doesn't look out of place in single- or double-subject shots, the way other ten+ footers can
+Air cushioning keeps this thing from slamming down when flash or strobes are attached

CONS:
-Light build means this thing can't hold an especially heavy lighting rig *especially* when extended to ten feet (must keep it to lightweight strobes or flash heads)
-Quick collapse to put it back in storage is absolutely not possible due to the air cushioning

(Note: I have two of these stands, having purchased them with the intent on using them outdoors for location portraits. I have not been able to use them outdoors yet, but I'll edit this post on their usefulness as location stands when I use them a bit outdoors.)
