5 out of 5 stars Can't Believe I'm Back In The Sixties At Last   November 22, 2007

My scanner arrived on 10/25/07 about noon. Hardware/software installation went very smoothly. I have a three year old DELL Dimension 8400 series computer with a Microsoft Windows XP Home operating system. I would guess I was up and running in about two or three hours, ready to scan my first images. Over the next two or three days I experimented with the scanner controls on my inital slides which I used as a learning tool. I had selected this scanner based on reviews and Q&A available on the internet and at this point I am very satisfied with the quality of the product. I bought it to scan something on the order of 1500 35mm slides and 600 126-film slides all of which date back to the 1960s and the early 1970s. At this point I have scanned about 375 slides -- mostly 35mm slides. For my purposes which are family slide shows and selected prints for a family album, I get very good results for about 85% of the slides using only the Digital ICE and ROC controls. The Digital DEE control has proven very effective for the few slides that have detail of interest in the under exposed areas of the image. For the remaining slides, I've learned to use the Curves control and the Color Balance (Brightness/Contrast)controls to improve images that were originally underexposed. I had initially been using Photobase 4.5 for brightness/contrast control for those slides.
I feel at this stage of my project I am still in the learning phase of the art and science of film slide scanning using the Nikon CoolScan V. I probably haven't read everything -- although I did try more than once -- in the Nikon print manual and electronic documentation about what a control does and why and how you might want to use it to improve on a given slide. In general I would say that their documentation is sufficient to get you started. But sometimes you need -- or at least want -- more than just a start. On a few slides I've tried to use the Manual Focus Adjustment to improve on the focus. The documentation on Manual Focus that I could find is very primitive. There is a Manual Focus Adjustment (Position) numeric slider control whose units are not identified. Further documentation in this area would be very helpful to me.
Over all, I am very satisfied with this product and can recommend it to others with a similar need.

4 out of 5 stars Good Scanner, but Hard Install   October 27, 2007

Great scanner after you get past the install. After many hours of trying too install, I had to call tech. support. Afteer several days of trying things finally got the scanner working and now does great scans. Nikon needs to improve on their install program. Still I love the scanner.

4 out of 5 stars Counting On The Learning Curve   October 4, 2007

I purchased the scanner to convert approximately 5,000 slides, shot over 30 years, to digital format. A necessary project as I work to share our pictures with our adult children.

Scanning alone takes about 1-2 minutes per slide. Editing the result adds to that. Other than being caught off guard by the time it will take, my initial reaction to using the CoolScan V is positive.

Packaging is functional but the box is quite large for what turns out to be a fairly compact scanner. The scanner is well-secured in its package but packaging is not intended for transporting/portability.

Initialization and hookup were straightforward. The instruction manual is not easy to follow but at least seems to have the information I will need. By my count, the instructions include 9 different languages (all on the same sheets) so you will need to sift through to find yours. Finally, a "quick start guide" was included but addressed only scanning film strips, not slides. My initial reaction is it will take a while to figure out the most efficient way to complete my project. I'm not particularly patient with poorly written or confusing instructions and I get really annoyed when the instructions put all the language options into one sheet or document (prevents me from discarding what I don't need).

Finally, the Nikon Scan software looks like it opens at least 3 windows to get one slide previewed, edited, and scanned. The windows overlap and makes it hard to manuever.

At this point, I am counting on the "learning curve" to help me as I dive into this project. I can foresee a lot of trial and error effort coming but am optimistic the scanner will eventually get me where I need to be.

4 out of 5 stars Great scanner despite being slow and tedious to operate   September 12, 2007

I love the results of this scanner, and their Mac software is pretty good. But there is no batch mode at all, no slide feeder available, and getting through a roll of slides or 5 strips of film takes all night! I had the Minolta ScanDual before - it was much faster to scan batches but the quality was not nearly as high. I think at this price point, there has to be a tradeoff, and Nikon chose to go for quality of image at the expense of speed of operation.

With 1,000 slides and hundreds of rolls of negatives to scan, I know I'll become very close to this new device over the coming months - hopefully the speed won't drive me crazy!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!   September 10, 2007

Not the cheapest film scanner, but for ease of installation, ease of use, and quality of results, this is the way to go. I particularly like the dirt and scratches filter (ICE) which works amazingly well, and the Kodachrome profile (which older versions did not have).

Downsides? It's slow. It makes noise (though not nearly as much as others I've heard). It's fussy when you try to feed in the film strip. These are not major problems, just things you must accept as part of film scanning.

Overall, very satisfied.
