Crumpler 6 Million Dollar Home bag - LOVE THIS BAG! October 9, 2008 I am sooo happy with this bag! Lots of padding to protect my Nikon D80 & enough room to fit my accessories.
Perfect for Modest Kit with Long Lenses, Extra Gear March 5, 2008 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
I love my 6MDH. It is lightweight, does not look like a bag full of pricy camera bits, and is very versatile. I carry it as my carry-on (when I travel with cameras and no laptop). The strap is long enough for me to carry messenger-style (I am 5'7", small/medium frame), or not, depending on mood and attire.
Normally, I do not care for front-flap bags, because I find it fiddly to have to unsecure the closure on the flap and then find what I want. But because this bag closes with VERY secure Velcro, plus the clip, I can close just the Velcro closure and not worry about the clip. No more fiddly closure! (But be aware that the Velcro is pretty loud: take your camera out before you enter the church, library, etc.) The front flap covers a two-part pocket that is the right size for small accessories, pens, lens caps, iPods, etc. The inner part of the the front pocket secures with Velcro and thus is right for important and easy-to-lose items (ID, lens cap when off the lens, keys, etc.). Inside the bag, there are the usual padded dividers that can be custom arranged, plus a large zip pocket in the top of the bag. Without my long lens mounted on the camera (see below for gear list), I could fit a manual or other similarly-sized item (back-up drive, sunglasses, etc.) in that pocket. There is one slim side pocket on each side of the bag, big enough for a point-and-shoot, memory wallet, phone, flash unit, etc. Probably not big enough for a lens or a water bottle.
The top handle is secure enough to allow carrying the bag by hand. The padded shoulder strap is comfortable, although a tiny bit too wide for me (can be an issue on bare, sunburned shoulders!).
Regular contents (and I still have plenty of empty room): D40x with strap, with 18-135mm lens mounted (hood reversed). 70-300mm VR lens (hood reversed). The bag also accommodates the camera with this lens mounted. Coolpix P5000 Manfrotto 3700 tabletop tripod + ball head Dust blower Lens caps Memory wallet Cleaning cloth Remote Extra battery for each camera Extra lens cap Notepad + pen Tissues Hand sanitizer
There is enough room (compartments or pockets) to add a flash unit; I just don't do a lot of flash photography. Also, I don't keep my chargers with the camera kit (they go with the travel bag of chargers...), but they would fit easily in the bag.
When I travel, I take out the dust blower and chuck in my wallet, iPod + headphones, sunglasses, passport (along with the other regular gear listed). On location when traveling, I remove the book and instead carry a hat or light jacket (depending on the climate) along with the camera gear. I can also get a small (16-oz) water bottle into the bag, although that makes it heavier.
I wish the shoulder padding were slightly narrower, and that there were a key clip inside the bag. But, it is stretching it to say that these are faults. The bag is extremely well-constructed, stretchable if need be, and unobtrusive. I am searching for an SLR + laptop bag that I will like as well, for the times when I need a computer!
excellent bag February 24, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The Crumpler 6 Million Dollar Home is well-constructed and thoroughly padded. The size is good for my Canon 5D with 24-105mm lens mounted and various related paraphernalia including a 430EX light, cleaning supplies, blower, battery chargers, spare battery, and spare memory cards. The 5D with 70-200mm f4L mounted is so tall that the cover of the bag is stressed, but that is a reasonable trade-off for me, to avoid a larger more cumbersome bag.
