Avoid ! October 24, 2007 Two of my friends had this phone. In both cases the phone died in the same fashion after 15 and 19 months. The screen went blank/ white and nothing could fix it. If you do a web search on Z520 blank screen, you can find that a good chucnk of these phone have this problem!
Good luck!
DO NOT BUY!! BUYER BEWARE! October 19, 2007 This phone is one of THE WORST phones I've ever had, and that is saying a lot since I mostly get hand-me-down phones, but this one I got new. For the first 2 months it was good, and the features were nice, but after 2 months, it started to turn off for no good reason, and the PPT button would get extremely annoying. I hate the fact that the hinge is not spring loaded, and you have to open it all the way until it clicks which is annoying too. I have trouble getting service on this phone more than I've had in the past. I also hate the back and clear buttons instead of call and end. It gets confusing, and is very frustrating. In vibrate mode, the phone is HORRIBLE! You can barely feel it, and after using it a while like texting back and forth with someone, sometimes it doesn't vibrate at all, or is so weak you don't notice it. Overall, this a horrible phone, even for the money. My old phones all broke, but they lasted A LOT longer than this one ever will. I am very disappointed in this phone and Sony Ericsson. I will never buy another one of their phones, and when I inquired about sending it out to get fixed, they expected me to be without a phone for 4-6 weeks while it was sent out to be repaired. Do not purchase because it will not hold to up, even for me (and I consider myself to be a VERY light user, and I'm always VERY careful with my phones because they are so expensive). NOT WORTH THE MONEY EVEN IF IT IS FREE!!!!
This phone is garbage. October 18, 2007 The problems with this phone have been well-documented on here already. I'm just chiming in to say I agree 100% with the customers that are regretting their choice. And I too have friends that have been burned by this phone. Save yourself some major headaches and don't even think about buying this.
I wanted to love it... October 7, 2007 I really wanted to love this phone. It has a broad feature-set and is fun to use - when it works. Unfortunately, it doesn't "work" for long! My neighbor, my husband, and I all got this phone at the same time. Our neighbor's screen died about 2 weeks after we got the phones. My husband's screen died less than a week before the end of the one-year warranty. Fortunately they replaced it, but the replacement phone is only covered for 90 days. (I hope it doesn't break!) Now MY phone's screen has died. I can pay a minimum of $167 to get a replacement phone or "deal with it"- "Sorry, there's nothing we can do." We've heard that a few times throughout all this!
All three of us experienced a large number of dropped calls while using this phone - all while watching the infamous commercials of Cingular (now AT&T) being the network of fewest dropped calls. I dropped calls at least 90% of the time! Or more! No kidding!!! It was horrible. I blamed AT&T until I talked to others and looked online. Apparently, it might just be the fault of this phone.
Bottom line: If you are signing up for a new 2-year contract with AT&T, don't choose this phone! It won't last that long. Again, I know of 4 used by me and my friends, and 3 didn't last one year. The 4th died one week after the end of the warranty. I've researched further, and this problem is not exclusive to us - it is quite common actually! If I had known then what I know now, I would not have purchased/choosen this phone.
Decent phone with a few complaints October 2, 2007 First the good:
The clarity is good, reception is good (I can hear fine and the other person hears okay), and the feature set is great (I've even used the stopwatch once or twice to time reactions in chem lab). Like most cell phones, the phone is sturdy, I've dropped it a number of times and still works fine.
Now the bad:
I would agree with several other reviewers who complained that their phone turns off randomly; mine does as well occasionally.
My biggest grievance with this phone is that there is too many alerts and everything requires too many button presses! For example: I'll be playing Tetris and I'll pause and minimize the game to send a message. Then, every time I do anything after that - place a call, send a message, anytime I even open the phone - a message pops up: "Tetris is running"; I have to hit okay. Then only two options: "Maximize" or "Stop" Well, neither! I want the game minimized! So, I hold down the back button until it goes away. Then another alert: "Tetris - Exit appliation?" I hit NO! So, just to do anything, that's a long series of buttons!
It's cool that I can minimize a java program in a middle of a game. It's NOT cool that it tries to force it's way back open! I want to minimize something until I'm ready to open it back up again. The phone should do what I want it to, not the other way around.
This theme of "button overburdening" carries over throughout all areas of the phone. To add a second recipient to a message takes a series of five buttons, not counting scrolling to the name. To delete a recipient takes another 5. Just to switch between text and numerical typing takes holding down the # button followed by a series of 4 button presses!
Also, the email will randomly pop up to ask if you want to check email. The email functionality of this phone is great, when I want to use it. I don't like getting random pop-ups that force me to accidentally click okay and something happens when I was in the middle of something else.
All of these things can be very annoying when you're just trying to send a quick message or place a quick call.
Summary:
I like the phone and I like the feature set. However, the execution of the feature set is not well thought-out. The functionality of some of the "features" of the phone was poorly implemented, clumsy, and at times annoying and frustrating to use.
I would give the phone 4 stars if it weren't for these inconveniences of the phone that could probably be fixed by a firmware update.
