1 out of 5 stars Very disappointed with the W580i.   December 19, 2007

My previous phone was the Sony Ericsson S710a, and loved it. So I thought the W580i would be an improvement from that. But sadly it's not. And for the price through Amazon being $.01, I should have bought a different phone even if I had to spend more.

Good:
Clear sound.
Small but good clear screen.

Bad:
Keys cracked right after I had it a month. Amazon didn't seem to know their own return policy as, of the 8 representitives I spoke with, 4 said it could be exchanged with no problem for a different phone, and 3 said they would research it only to send a standard denial email, and one had the courage to say all of them were wrong, apologize for being transferred, and tell me what did I expect from a free phone.

No light on the camera
So so camera, there is pixel lines in every picture
Horrilbe speaker phone
Don't even think about using the speaker to play music.
Sometimes will receive an error of death.
Slider feels flimsy, and I worry that it will eventually break.
Battery life isn't great.
Wrist strap hole is useless

Overall it's a basic phone aimed at teens. Wheras the S710a I would say was marketed towards an older crowd. So I was a sucker for buying this, and now I have to live with it for my 2 year contract. I will most likely end up buying a phone off of eBay within 6 months just to get away from this one.

I recommend a DO NOT BUY...plenty of other phones are better than this one.

2 out of 5 stars Amazing Features - BAD Design   December 17, 2007

I've been a die-hard SonyEricsson fan for years...ever since the T616. I held onto my S710 until it's very last breath. When I finally had to make a change, I pondered and compared for months. Call me a nerd, but form and function in mobile phones is incredibly important!

Upon first receiving my W580i, I was ecstatic. The feature set and user-interface are AMAZING! The size is exactly what I wanted...I can't even feel that there's a phone slipped into my pockets.

As an avid texter, it wasn't long before the keys on the numeric keypad started cracking. The keys on the slider are now disloging from the case as well. I filed a return with SE, but how is one meant to function without a cell phone for 4-6 weeks while they repair? Further...there's nothing being done to prevent it from happening again?

For light use, this phone is awesome. For a power user...hold out for something else!

4 out of 5 stars Love it, but be wary   December 11, 2007

I've had this phone for almost a month and I've loved every second of it. I'm a long time Nokia user and finally switched to Sony for the slider and alleged superior vocal quality. I love the w580i for its small size, functionality, and endless array of features. Unfortunately, my pampered little phone has already had a button break, something I find unacceptable before at least the year mark. Also, the sound is not much better than my former Nokia (even after the Nokia had broken in half...love the flip phone). But like I said, I still love this phone. It is snazzy and fresh and cooler than lime jello on a hot summer day.

4 out of 5 stars Nice phone   December 8, 2007

I got this phone from At&T when I upgraded my plan. It is nice phone with good features, voice quality, signal reception is pretty good. I love its 2MP camera. Actually this phone's camera take better pictures than my Kodak easy share 4.1MP camera. Volume of Walkman is loud enough..overall ia good phone...the only problem is that it is very thin so I bought a clear case for its protection...

With regard to the customers and the phone's 'lock' features not working...the phone does not automatically lock by closing the slider. You must turn on lock features manually, and then, whether it goes to sleep closed or open, it will require that you press the unlock button, and then....press the ok button to unlock the rest.

I have had no problems with the phone coming unlocked on its own.

I am enjoying the MP3 player...it sounds absolutely fantastic, and the transferring of files is simple (if not a little slow, but that is tolerable) and I did not require any software support. Just pop in the M2 Memory card, plug the phone into the PC, drag and drop files into the music folder. I was able to place a ton of songs and a few audio-books in there as well. The sound is phenomenal for a phone.

The functionality of the phone is good. I'd say no better than other good phones, but good enough. The slider works well, the voice-dialing works well, and as with other phones, you need to either disable PTT button if you aren't using it, or put up with accidentally hitting it as you talk.

I've had phones ranging from the HK 8525 to the Blackberry 8300 Curve, and this phone, though not as "Smart" as those, offers the same great memory expansion, songs, pictures, etc etc in a smaller, sleeker package.

I have no complaints.
