5 out of 5 stars A great, reliable, basic cell phone   April 7, 2008

Having come from about 18 months with the horrible LG Chocolate, the Motorola W385 is a pleasure to use in every respect. Like many others here who like the W385, I wanted a basic, reliable, well-made cell phone. I already have a stereo system, an Ipod, a digital camera, a PC, and a television. I have no need or desire to watch movies on my phone or to use it as a computer. I just want to be able to make and receive phone calls with no hassle and with utter reliability. The W385 achieves that, and does it admirably.

The phone fits comfortably in my hand. The keypad and its buttons are solid -- not too big, not too small -- just the right size for an adult, and provide good tactile feedback. And I like the blue backlighting with it. The navigation buttons, volume controls, soft keys, voice-command button, etc., are where you would expect them to be. The on-screen menus are easy enough to bring up and navigate. While the phone's camera may not produce image quality that would rival the finest digital camera you can buy, it is acceptable to me. As I mentioned, I already have a digital camera, and when I travel or go to interesting places, I take it with me. The camera on the phone is for quick, spur-of-the-moment shots, the quality of which meets my expectations. Voice quality on this phone is very, very good. While some of the reviewers have reported problems with battery life, I have had no such problems with mine. Perhaps it is because I turn Bluetooth off when I'm not using it. Also, I'm not on the phone for hours at a time. In any event, the battery life has been very good for me.

All in all, I would give this phone my highest recommendation to anyone who doesn't need all the bells and whistles with a cell phone. I researched phones for a couple of weeks before deciding on this one. The reviews were consistently good, from one site to another. And unlike the nightmarish LG Chocolate, I am delighted with the Motorola W385. Though Verizon is legendary for being stingy -- there isn't even one basic game on this phone, because the company wants you to download and purchase them -- that is obviously not the fault of the W385 itself. If you have reasonable expectations, they will all be met or surpassed by the W385.

5 out of 5 stars Great Cell Phone!   March 12, 2008

I really love the simplicity, size, and clear reception this phone has. My last phone was by LG and I was never able to get good reception for very long unless I stood outside my door or near a window. I was always experiencing "dropped calls". When I finally updated my contract I decided to try the Motorola W385 based on reviews I had read. I'm glad I did. Not only is it a reliable phone but it was free through Verizon with reactivation of a two year contract. I also love the phone exterior. It has a rubber like texture, not slippery like most phones. I also purchased a snap on case which is also rubberized for added protection against dropping it. I recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Basic Phone   February 19, 2008

I got the w385 as a free upgrade through Verizon and it's great. I don't need a lot of bells & whistles, just a phone. It blows away my old LG 3300 in terms of sound quality (Minneapolis metro). I didn't know how bad my old one was until I got this one; it's about the equal of my land line. It also has a great feel. The black rubberized case is easy to hold and doesn't make me look like some NYC bling-king wannabe. And did I mention how good the sound is? If you don't need a lot of extras, but you do need a solid feeling phone with great sound, at a price (free) that can't be beat: this one could be right for you.

5 out of 5 stars Great balance of attributes - a solid performance pick if not a status symbol.   February 8, 2008

As a IT pro I get involved in lots of cell phones and PDA solutions. When my cell phone contract came up and it was time to get a new one I switched from Nokia to this Motorola w385 after some intensive research. The w385 isn't the slickest or greatest phone in the world, but it gets the important things right and does very little wrong. Factor in price and it's a very liveable winner.

Hots:
1) Excellent reception - the number one feature of a cell phone/carrier. A big part of this is Verizon's excellent (if pricey) network service. I get bars with this thing in the NJ Transit train tunnels and lots of other weird underground spaces I never got bars with the Nokia/T-mobile combo.
2) Excellent audio clarity - the other principle feature of a cell phone. This phone is loud and crisp as a handset. As a speaker phone it isn't state of the art, but it's quite usable. Audio intelligibility is way ahead of the pack.
3) Regular cell phone features, such as Bluetooth (and easy to config), voice dialing, lots of quickdials, camera, etc... present and well implemented and easy to find.
4) Interface - like all Motorola phones the interface is a little more "vibrantly colorful" (i.e. glitzy) than I prefer - and some annoying animations slow the interface's speed a bit - but this model has the features well organized and easy to find. Most features can be mapped to your choice of hotkey.
5) Price - this was free after rebate in the latest promotion. It's awesome that this level of quality and performance is now available in a low priced phone.
6) Tough rubberized nonslip finish - attractive and tactile.
7) Outside screen shows caller ID on incoming calls so you can tell without opening who is calling.

Not so hot:
1) VGA camera. The camera is fine, and is just as good as the one on my last phone, but be aware that this is a 640k model, not a gigapixel so if photo performance is important to you, this isn't your phone.
2) No color choices. I'm also not so wild about the silver interior. I wish the whole thing were black - but this is a quibble for me.
3) It's just a cell phone (what do you expect at this price?) Although web surfing, text messaging, GPS Navigator and the like are available (costly) options the slow CPU and small screen make this a less than suitable platform for those advanced features. If you can afford the scratch for those monthlies, you should kick the bucks for a top end phone optimized for those features.
4) Unit is thin - (although not quite as this as the RAZR - dimensions about the same as the KRZR). Like the Krazer this unit is a bit long. It doesn't sit in my shirt pocket quite as nicely as the tiny Nokia flip. The KRZR is better looking too - with its color choices and smoky mirror finish. On the plus side for the w385 the rubber finish enhances grip - which might save its life. Also the w385 fits the hand better than the RAZR and is a really great unit ergonomically in use. It sits just right in the ear and the microphone is right in front of your mouth (just like a real telephone). OK - all this is probably, on balance, a plus rather than a minus (unless you must have some wild color to match your look).
5) Microphone recordings in "My Sounds" cannot be used as ring tone. I guess they want to save their income stream from selling ring tones.

Battery life is very good, if not superb. I can use it for 2 days of light normal use before I drop a single bar on the battery. I could go 3 to 4 days easy without having to recharge. Used heavily (lots of speakerphone) I easily manage the whole day with some bars to spare. If you find you're sucking the battery in one day you can upgrade to the high capacity battery option, but you'd be a maniac.

All in all this is a great value in a basic phone - nailing all the important points. My general impression is one of solidity, quality, and performance within its areas of competence (basic phone functions).

5 out of 5 stars Best Deal Ever!   January 14, 2008

I received this phone for free from Verizon when we signed up for 2 years. I absolutely LOVE it!!! It's just a nice sturdy phone, period. Battery life is excellent compared to other phones out on the market. Menu is very easy to use and the screen is nice and bright. Also I really like the fact that the external screen runs lengthwise...pretty cool feature. And for a cell phone camera this one is very good.

My only issue with the phone (and maybe it's something I've just overlooked) is that I can't delete a saved ringtone that I received from a forwarded message. In the future if I want to get rid of them, how would I be able to do that? It has ALL the ringtones, the standard and the ones I save, as "locked".
