1 out of 5 stars The Chocolate is not so tasty after all!!!   August 31, 2007

I was really excited about this phone when I first purchased it. It looked beautiful, was attractive in every way, had a lot of cool features, including a good camera. However, the superficial features of this phone faded very quickly as reality set in. I had 3 major, exasperating problems with this phone:

1. The snazzy wheel that is so highly promoted was unwieldy. Every time I would use my finger to turn the navigation wheel, it would accidentally touch the touch-sensitive controls -- usually, it would be that I accidentally touched the "clear" command, and I would have to start all over again with what I was doing.
2. The touch-sensitive controls are too sensitive! Even when I turned it down to 'low', I still had problems with it. This is a terrible design!!! Any time I talk on the phone, my cheek would inevitably touch one of those 'controls' and I would get buzzed at (it vibrates to let you know that you pushed something). Suddenly, I would be in a menu that I didn't want to be in. This is the worse when I am using my voicemail or calling some place (i.e. verizon), where they put me through a phone tree (you know, "press 1 if..., press 2 if..."), because the controls light up (to show that it's active) and suddenly, my cheek is causing me to run through different menus. Horrible, horrible! I hate this feature!!! It caused me so much trouble. Great idea in theory but really stupid in practice.
3. The call quality was HORRIBLE!! I live in southern california where Verizon coverage is AWESOME. However, while using this phone, the other person was always distorted and unclear. I had to repeatedly ask, "What was that? Can you repeat that?" There was a terrible echo, and turning the volume up meant that I was hearing the distortion at a LOUDER volume. It did not help me understand the other person better.

The reason why I purchase a phone is in order to make phone calls. I expect to get good reception and great call quality. I expect to be able to hear the other person. This phone is attractive, "sleek and sexy", but it does not do what it's supposed to do. Seriously, the only thing I want sleek and sexy is my husband, because at least HE can communicate.

Bottom line? I am returning my phone tomorrow and I highly discourage you from making the purchase of an LG Chocolate Disaster.

4 out of 5 stars love it..   August 10, 2007

I just go the new LG Chocolate VX8550 and it is a great phone. My biggest gripe is that it is not compatable with my new MacBook. I think that LG needs to retool it's music software so that it either used itunes as well as windows media player or becomes Mac friendly.

The design of the phones is slim and very light. It is very comfortable to talk on and the battery seems to last a long time in standby. Using other applications, however, drains it quickly.

I would encourage you to consider this phone, I think that you will be happy with it!

5 out of 5 stars Great phone stylish design   August 9, 2007

This is really great phone. I have had mine for about a month and it is working well. The camera takes decent pics for a camera phone. Call quality is great. Reception is excellent on Verizon- in the Washington DC area nothing else comes close!!

Only issue is keeping the screen clear of scratches- I bought a screen protector off of Ebay and it is working well.

3 out of 5 stars Nice Phone, MP3 Player could use some work   August 4, 2007

The phone is nice. Works well, good reception, have no issues with it.

The MP3 player could use some work. I primaraly use the MP3 player for a 4 hour morning show. The MP3 player has no book mark and a painfully slow fast forward (goes about 4 seconds ff for every 1 second of holding down the ff). The player also loses it's place in the MP3 very easily.

This caused me to have to break up the 4 hour mp3 into 15 minute segments, which also game me a new list of problems. The player does not keep a playlist in the order you uploaded it onto the phone. The only way I found to accomplish this is to go into the properties of each MP3 file and change the title. Changing the file name doesn't work cause the Chocolate reads the title name and sorts it that way.

1 out of 5 stars Less than 1 day old, and slide mechanism already jammed   July 27, 2007

I very recently signed a new contract with Verizon, and received my LG Chocolate VX 8550 phone in the mail earlier today. After reading the online reviews for this phone, I've been very excited and even saved up the $150 to get it with a 2 yr. contract. I take great care and am very gentle with all my electronics (to make them last as long as possible), and was really upset when my phone jammed this evening. I only made 2 phone calls with this phone, and after my last call, I closed the phone like usual. A few minutes later, when trying to answer an incoming call, I was unable to slide open the phone. Up until that point, it had remained untouched, didn't fall on any surface, have anything spilled or dropped on it, or any other trauma happen to it. I've tried to see if something somehow got stuck in-between the phone layers, and have tried really hard to slide it open again without breaking it, all to no avail. I suspect that one (or both) of the hinges on the slide has jammed.

I find it very irritating that something that costs $500 can be this fragile.

As for the rest of the phone, I found the keypad to be a bit annoying to use (not ergonomic) and I didn't like that only PCs are compatible with this phone (for things like music downloads -- I'm a devout Mac and Linux user). The glossy finish on the phone ensures constant smudging all over, which I find annoying. However, the aesethics of this phone are amazing. Very sharp and bright screen, nice quality photo camera, and fairly easy to navigate. Sound quality was good, as was ease of getting around the menus. I've yet to test the mp3 and downloading speeds. It apparently also has a voice recorder, but I've yet to find it (not easy to find).

From the many positive reviews I've read for this phone, it's possible that mine was just a manufacturing glitch. But since it's a brand new model, I am now skeptical to exchange for another Chocolate VX 8550 until more, longer-term, reviews are available.
