Best phone I've owned February 16, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I have to admit, I was a little concerned when I upgraded from my venerable Treo 680 smartphone. The Treo did everything I wanted it to, but I didn't need all the extra smartphone features anymore so I decided I was going to "downgrade" to a regular phone. The new AT&T Motorola RAZR2 V9 caught my eye almost immediately, and having tested it out extensively I finally convinced myself to buy it.
So far, I haven't been disappointed.
The phone itself feels sturdy and solid, not flimsy and cheap like the original RAZR V3 did. True, the exterior smudges quite a bit but that's easily cleaned off. It's slightly thinner and narrower than the original, plus it has a large, impressive exterior LCD display. The camera isn't that impressive, but it's a lot better than the 640x480 of my Treo.
Some features I really liked about this phone:
1. The ability to control the phone ringer when I have a headset on (Speaker, Headset, or Both). I can make the phone ring through the headset only so it doesn't disturb others, and when I have it on vibrate it doesn't have to play music through the headset. Very convenient. 2. The included mini to micro USB adapter so I can use my old V3 chargers, and the headphone adapter so I can use regular headphones. A very considerate move by Motorola and AT&T. 3. Support for AT&T's new Mobile Backup - I can backup my contacts online (subscription required) so if I ever lose or irreparably damage the phone I can restore the numbers remotely to a similar phone. 4. Bluetooth 2.0 support - lets my headset work farther from the phone than before. Quite handy when I'm working and moving about. 5. The Options softkey that lets me access several important functions (Bluetooth Link, Camera, Alarm Clock) quickly. 6. MMS messaging is faster, probably because of the newer 3G tech (though I don't live in a 3G coverage area)
Some gripes: 1. I can't fully customize the buttons - there's no way to configure the Options softkey to go through *my* preferred apps, and there's no way to change the default Media Net and Cellular Video buttons, both of which I rarely if ever use. And without the old Menu button of the original RAZR, those deficiencies become more glaring. 2. No flash on the camera, so avoid using it in low lighting.
Overall, I really like my new V9, and I recommend it to anyone in the market for a fairly high end, non-smartphone handset.
Two & a half weeks and NO PHONE February 10, 2008 6 out of 31 found this review helpful
I ordered this phone two and a half weeks ago and never got it. I even had to approve several delays in shipping dates (even though Amazon claims to have it in stock). Two calls to customer service have wasted both my time and who knows how many cell minutes on my current phone.
For all my efforts I get an email today saying they cancelled my original order but if I order it again I shouldn't experience the same delay. Say what$!#$?? No explanation, nothing. Don't get me wrong I truly appreciate the quick shipping that another merchant provided for my phone charger. It should make an excellent paper weight since I HAVE NO PHONE!!!
Buyers beware, I'm extremely disgusted with this purchase (or should I say attempted purchase). I was patient and gave Amazon two attempts to resolve the problem only to have them waste my time and money. I guess this is the type of customer service you can expect from a website. Me, I'm going to a real store.
Great phone functions, horrible build quality, horrible customer service January 25, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
DISREGARD THE 5 STARS, I GIVE IT 1 STAR NOW
I got this phone after Christmas '07, so I had it 8 and a half months until recently after charging it I disconnected the charger and the miniUSB port ripped out of the phone with the charger. This was not my fault; I did not pull it at an angle or do anything unusual. It was under warranty still and I sent my phone to Motorola to be repaired. They then called me and told me they weren't going to repair it because it was out of warranty because somehow the damage was my fault. Then they tell me the phone is unrepairable and I have to buy a new phone. I talked to supervisors and everything.
So basically, if you want a really cool phone that's going to last less than a year, buy this phone! its like throwing away money! and if you don't like quality customer service, this is just for you!
A disappointment! January 22, 2008 5 out of 8 found this review helpful
I ordered this phone after using the original RAZR V3 for more than 3 years. I expected it to be even better than the original. I used the phone for 2 weeks before deciding to return it. It is a beautiful phone, but unfortunately for me, falls short of my expectations.
Pros: Looks great; Both displays are high resolution; Thinner than the original RAZR; Silicone type covering on back helps keep the phone from sliding around on your desk; Fast internet access due to the 3G technology; Accepts up to a 2GB micro SD card.
Cons: So-so battery life (it did improve after the first few charges just as the manual states); Poor reception in areas that I never had problems with before (this might be the difference between the 3G and the older network); Heavier than the original RAZR; Even worse than the original RAZR when it comes to fingerprints/smudges; Side buttons are difficult to operate when I want to operate them to change the ringer volume (usually going from loudest to vibrate or vise-versa), but then seem too sensitive when I am holding the phone and pressing them by accident; The hinge makes a creeking noise after a few days that is noticible to people you are talking to while pressing the phone to your ear; The ringer is not as loud as the original and I found myself regularly missing calls if I had the TV or radio on even at moderate levels; The micro USB cover is plastic and probably won't last long.
Overall, I just wasn't impressed. Hopefully Motorola and AT&T will make the necessary adjustments to correct some of these issues before the phone becomes widely accepted.
Note: I didn't rate the music/video/camera/bluetooth capabilty of this phone because I didn't keep it long enough to use those features.
The phone is not what you read about it January 18, 2008 0 out of 4 found this review helpful
This phone does not have Talk to Me option as its been, described on the Amazon website for this product (blocked by ATT). On the outside screen you can only control music. Menu is not so rich as in generic V9. Software is fast and reliable. Sound quality is very good. Phone's surface is a magnet for your fingerprints. I am not happy because of missing Talk to Me option that would make this phone cool.
