Much better phones out there January 24, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
My husband and I have had these phones for 5 months now. We have never had more dropped calls than we have in the past five months with these phones. We did purchase these phones when we switched carriers, so perhaps that is the problem. Though I doubt it. Even with full bars of service, the calls drop randomly and often. And then the phone goes into "emergency mode" and we're unable to make any calls at all. At first we thought that something was wrong with the particular phones we had, like a bad batch, because we know several people in this area with AT&T service who never have dropped call problems. So I called in and exchanged the phones under the warranty, yet we still have the same problems.
Quite honestly, the phone itself isn't that bad. I prefer the Motorola, or even better the LG operating system to Samsung, but it's a decent phone with enough features for the standard cell phone user. If it weren't for the constant dropped calls, I wouldn't mind keeping the phone until I was able to upgrade.
My only regret is not returning these phones within the 30 day trial period. If I had I wouldn't be stuck with all of this call frustration. I would recommend buying a different manufacturer's phone, but if you're stuck on buying a Samsung, go with one of the Blackjack's.
Good phone January 14, 2008 I like that this phone is very slim, and the screen is bright. The autolock function keeps the phone from doing weird things in my pocket. The programming is fast and stable. The sound quality is generally good, though I've had a few problems.
I do not like that the camera does not seem to take that great of photos. The upper right and left soft buttons do not activate on the top half; you have to hit the bottom part of the button rather hard. The phone plays mp3's, and can do so in the background while other things are happening. The music pauses for a call then resumes. But the ringtones must be shorter than 30 seconds; you can't just set any song you want as your ringtone or alarm.
I am indifferent that the buttons are rather small and I use the phone with my fingernail.
Overall, I'm quite happy with the phone, and glad I got it.
Like the Light & Fast 3G Phone, Not pleased with Battery January 3, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I love the phone. The Samsung a727 has fast 3G HSDPA internet. It's very light. Very slim. Don't worry about locking the keypad before putting it in your pocket. I have had it for 4 months and have never locked it, and have never mistakenly called someone. The buttons are flat and flush with the rest of the phone so it isn't a problem.
It has amazing features. Every application has many settings too. The alarm for instance. Besides setting the time, I can choose what days of the week to go off, snooze time, and how many times to snooze. The calendar is nice, bluetooth works well, and the internet is nice.
Sometimes I use AT&T's MediaNet for internet browsing, but you can also download Opera Mini browswer which is sometimes better. You can also download Gmail and Google Maps as applications, which are very useful. They are made for the phone. Just make sure you have an unlimited data plan though.
I have tried to tether the phone to a laptop, and I had it working for a while with a Media Max 200 plan (I think that's what it is - its unlimited data), but then it stopped working. I've had it connect a few times more but then I can't get online. I don't know if its because I don't have a tether plan or what, but a lot of people want to know if you can tether it, and the answer is yes. Just not sure what data plan you need. The laptop internet was very fast.
I'm not in love with the battery, but I think I just received a bad one the first time. In the beginning it would beep only once at me and then die about 5 minutes later. A few weeks later the battery indicator would show about 75%, but then a 20 minutes conversation would kill it. And now, after charging it all night, it only gets 3.5 hours of standby (yes, standby, not talk time), and the phone dies. Needless to say I am getting another one from Samsung. The bad thing is it will take 7-10 days to send my battery and have them send me a new one. Unfortunately they do not do their RMAs like other companies like Western Digital where they send you the new product and charge your card, then after you send your broken product in, they remove the charge from your card.
But don't let this deter you from buying the phone. I think I was just unlucky and got the bad battery. I'm sure the one that comes in the mail will be much better.
Hope this helps anyone thinking about buying the phone.
Surpassed Expectations December 17, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
After reading mixed reviews about the a727, I was worried I would not enjoy my new phone any more than my last. When I received the phone, I was pleasantly surprised. Everything thing functions intuitively and looks good too. Feels very sturdy, and compact. It is spectacular.
Nice phone for 2 months, then rebooting all the time November 12, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is my first Samsung phone ever. I have always purchased Nokia, and I have been with Cingular/AT&T from the start. I never had a problem with my Nokia phones, but I wanted this one because of its form factor - very, very thin and light.
I don't use the data/text features, but I do use the Bluetooth sometimes, and it pairs nicely with my cheap Samsung WEP170 ear bud. The camera is great, even though some pictures are blurry in low light (no flash). it does get a weaker signal than my wife's Motorola Razr V3 - she will have full signal or at least 2 bars all the time, and I sometimes lose signal altogether while sitting next to her. Hers will ring in her huge purse and inside a case, and mine will be in my cotton shirt's pocket and not work. We use the same service (and have a family plan with even the same features), so it appears to just be a weaker phone. As long as I don't get off the beaten path too far, I get decent reception.
All was well until two days ago (had the phone for exactly 2 months). I heard it make the "whooosh" noise of the AT&T splash at startup, and the phone had rebooted itself in my shirt pocket and was showing my welcome screen. I thought AT&T had done a software update, or something, so I thought nothing of it. The phone is brand new, not even scratched, so I figured it surely was something simple and nothing wrong. Then, it started rebooting during calls, dropping the person I was talking to silently, and whooshing in my ear. It has done it about 15 times since that first time (two days ago), and AT&T has no answers. It even turned off silently and stayed off one time in my pocket, making me miss calls until I realized it wasn't on. I keep the keypad locked at all times when not using it, so I know it is software-related. AT&T wants me to take it up with Samsung or they will send me a refurbished unit for my new phone (no thanks). I called Samsung, and they gave me an RMA number and an address, so I will send it to them and see what happens. Meanwhile, I have no phone to use.
I would have given it a somewhat glowing review just 3 days ago, but I can't help but wish I had my Nokia back as I sit here with no phone at all.
