5 out of 5 stars LG Trax CU575 Solid, Reliable, Excellent Phone   March 24, 2008

This is an outstanding phone. I got my first one from AT&T about a year ago and was extremely impressed with the intuitive interface, call quality, reception and features. I don't use my phone as my primary MP3 device, but the music player is easy to use and the drag-and-drop ability to transfer music (and photos) from a Windows PC is very nice compared to some of the cumbersome software that is required by some other phones.

I am pretty hard on my phones and the Trax held up great carrying it in my pocket with no case. In over a year I haven't had one single issue or problem with the phone. It pairs flawlessly with bluetooth devices, the 3G network is extremely fast, the screen is bright and crisp and the menus are easy to navigate.

The only very minor complaint is that I haven't found a way to sync my address book with my computer. Any of the aftermarket software I've found does not work with the CU575. It can be done manually using Outlook and .vsp files with the memory card, but that is pretty cumbersome. This isn't a huge deal, but it seems like this business oriented phone would have that capability.

So, I went to the AT&T store last week because I was eligible for an upgrade. I looked at the new RAZR V3xxx, the Sony Ericsson Walkman w580i, the latest similar offering from Samsung (I forget the model) and I was left unimpressed. The new RAZR looks like a nice solid phone, but it was very expensive even with the upgrade pricing. The Samsung looked like typical good Samsung quality but didn't jump out at me either way. I actually bought the Sony w580i and took it home. It felt like a toy and I was convinced that it wouldn't last very long in my pocket! It felt like a cheap toy. I returned it and started looking again. As it turned out, the LG Trax STILL looks like the best bang for the buck in the store.

After all that looking, I finally "upgraded" to the exact same phone I've been using for the last year! With the rebates, I got the CU575, car charger, case and a Samsung WEP410 bluetooth headset for a shade over a hundred bucks. That is the best deal on a great phone ANYWHERE. So, my old Trax was handed down to my son and I am using the new one.

If you want a very functional phone with admirable multimedia capabilities that will last forever, this is as far as you need to look.

5 out of 5 stars I love it - Happy with my decision to buy it   February 6, 2008

I got this phone in Nov. of 2007. I upgraded through AT&T. Overall, I love the phone. I only have a few complaints.

I love how large and colorful the screen is. I love the mirror/screen on the front; it is a great way to check for gunk in your teeth if you just finished eating in a public place or it is nice when you have a cold and you wanna make sure your nose is all clear. I have never had a reception problem and I always have 4-5 bars. I also like that you can read your text w/o opening the phone. I has a lot of neat features, you just have to play with it to see what they all are. I also like that if you have a memory card and sync cable you can put your snapshots from your computer on the phone, then save them as wallpaper, ringer ids or just have the convience of having your pics on your phone to share with people.

One big prob I have with it is the volume when you are talking. If you have it up as loud as it can go you can still hardly hear the person and I often get complaints that my voice is low for them also. My solution to this is speakerphone. I can hear them and they can hear me.

I use the mp3 player... if you're gonna use it, get the sync cable and memory card on ebay or amazon. It's is a lot cheaper. I got the cable for 99 cents and AT&T wanted $39.99 and the card for $35 as opposed to $79.99. I got the 4 gig memory card (holds 1000 songs) I tried to sync 700 songs and for no logical reason only 435 went on the phone. It said error with no explanation.

One thing I don't like is that the songs that are on the phone are all mixed in with my ringtones in one folder so when I am looking for a ringtone I have to scroll through 400 songs. Also, the music library takes a long time to load up and it also takes a while to sync the music. I guess it is just not made to have many songs on it; it really slows the phone down with the 400 I have. It is still nice to have the option to put a few.
It is a good phone, but as for the music, well I just bought an ipod.

5 out of 5 stars Grown Up Phone with New Jack Technology   January 9, 2008
I purchased 2 new phones for my teenage son's and really enjoyed the new multimedia functionality but didn't want the hip hop gadgetry. I selected the LG CU575 and added the 4 gig memory stick. I can do everything there's can and look professional while conducting meetings and with my formal attire. No coverage problems or disconnects.

I live in the Houston Texas area.

1 out of 5 stars I guess someone has to write the bad review   January 8, 2008

I purchased two of these LG Trax (CU575) phones as part of an AT&T family plan. Other phones on the plan are the Motorola Razr2 V9, Nokia 6555 (Black), and Nokia N75. These phones are being used in the Dallas/Fort Worth area of Texas.

Of all the phones on the family plan, the Trax is the worst. It has poor reception (especially indoors) and call quality. When holding the Trax in the same location as the others, it will only pick up 3 bars while the others will have a full 5 bars. There is also a constant hissing/static noise during calls. It is most evident during the momentary pauses and breaks in a conversation. It mostly goes away when the conversation resumes, but you can still hear it in the background. This background noise problem is found in both Trax phones. Nothing I've done eliminates the problem. Talking indoors (in an isolated room), outdoors (in an open area)... nothing.

This phone is all flash and not much else. It looks good on the outside, but it's a different story once you open it up. The interface, while easy to use, is ugly (honestly, it's the ugliest interface I've seen on a phone since cell phones switched to color screens). The included themes and wallpaper are ugly. The icons are ugly. I didn't like the fact that there wasn't an option to browse my phonebook by caller ID photos. Instead you just browse by name, and each name has an ugly icon next to it.

The Trax comes equipped with a 1.3MegaPixel camera. This pales in comparison to the 2MegaPixel cameras of the Razr2, 6555, N75, and just about any other phone being released now. I've found photos taken with the Trax to have too much of a greenish-yellow tint.

On top of the subpar camera and ugly interface, the Trax features a dated interior screen. The Trax interior screen only shows about 65K (that's 65,000) colors, and I believe the smaller outside screen shows about the same color range or less. This magnifies the ugliness displayed on the screens. The crappy pictures taken on the subpar camera will look even worse because the display can't show off a large range of colors. The Nokia 6555 and N75 displays both have about 1.6M (that's 1,600,000) colors. The Razr2 displays (both inside and out) have about 262K (that's 262,000) colors. Most phones being released now are atleast 120K+ colors.

The keypad isn't that bad. It will be hard to text on, as well as pressing numbers without looking, but with practice and time it can be done.

After all this bad, there must have been something I liked or thought was decent... right? Well I found the speakers used to play back music from the mp3 player were decent. I would rank it right up there with the speakers for the Razr2 and Nokia 6555. However, the Trax (along with the Razr2 and 6555) was far behind the Nokia N75. While on the subject of the music features of the phone, I didn't really like the touch pad on the front. They worked as they were suppose to, but I would have preferred buttons. Also the phone doesn't have much space for music (only about 30MB is free) so you will have to buy a micro SD card.

Summary - The Good:
-Speakers for playing music were average
-Battery life is as advertised. (About 3hrs talk time)
-Easy to use interface

Summary - The Bad:
-Poor reception
-Poor call quality (hissing/static noise during calls)
-Ugly user interface
-Only 1.3MP camera (pictures had a greenish-yellow tint)
-Internal and External displays only have about 65K colors
-Keypad (too flat and nothing to help distinguish buttons from one another, and the directional pad buttons are kind of small and hard to press)
-Couldn't set phonebook to display caller ID photos along with name/number
-Front touch pad can only be used for music player (Can't be used to check text messages like the N75 and Non-AT&T version of Razr2)
-Proprietary data port (cable was not included)
-No software included (the software needed to sync via bluetooth can be found through google, just search for LG Sync and LG Desktop)

4 out of 5 stars Great Phone for the Most Part   November 5, 2007

I just bought this phone yesterday for use on AT&T service and it is terrific. I really like the design. The aluminum finish gives it a nice profesional looking design. It also has a very nice screen. I really like how you can start the music player wtihout opening phone and how you can take self-portrait photos using the screen. The phone is also nice and thin.
The phone looks very nice when you open it up. There is a large screen inside that is great for the numerous video features. However, one design complaint is definitely the keypad. I am a frequent texter, and the keys are really cramped together and totally flat so it is really hard to text quickly.
This phone has great features! It even supports the new cellular video service where you can watch streaming news and sports clips wherever you are. I have to admit that I was a little skeptical being that I do not live in a 3G area. However, clips only took about 10 seconds to load which is incredibly fast for edge. This phone is also great for music. There is a pretty funky scroll pad on the front, which acts as music controls when the phone is closed. This is better than that of the samsung sync, another at&t music phone, because you can feel it when you touch the pad because it is tactile, while with the sync the buttons are the same material as the phone itself.
Besides the keypad, I have a few minor complaints. I wish that lg would use a standard 3.5 mm or even 2.5 mm headset jack instead of their own special one. If you really want to listen to music on this as I do, you have to go out and spend money on additional headphones while normally you have a regular pair lying around anyway. Also, lg should have used a mini-usb jack to connect to your computer so that you could just use a cord that probably came with your digital camera or something like that.
All in all, the lg trax is a great phone. Nothing feature or performance wise is bad with this phone. There are simply a few design issues to clear up, most of which do not affect the performance of the phone. (except the keyboard) If you are looking for a new at&t phone with all the features and you do not want a razr like everyone else has, I would go with the lg trax.
