 Wonderful phone except when outside on bright sunny days February 25, 2008

I use my phones as a cell phone and not an internet device. All of the features of this phone work perfectly for my uses, and I'm starting to like the camera and video features as well. I especially love the weight of the phone and the stainless exterior that make it feel less like a toy than some competitors. Like other modern cell phones, the LCDs are nearly impossible to read in the sun. My old Samsung S-105 was the only phone I ever saw that had a good external LCD for viewing in sunlight because it had a reflective background behind the monochrome LCD. I miss that feature occasionally, but overall am very happy that I upgraded to this modern LG!

When I first got my VX8700 in early November 2007 I loved it. Stylish, great looking, High-res screen, giant screen, slim. I really loved this phone. I have never actually cared that much about a phone before until I got this one. After a couple of weeks, the bluetooth started connecting/disconnecting intermittently. Regardless of being in call or not. I swapped out the bluetooth for a better one that match the product manufacturer. No change. Had them upgrade the software. Fixed it for about 10 minutes. Swapped out phones. Was offered a refurbished one. I paid for a new one, so I insisted on a new one. While I was going through this big hassle, another couple with the same phones came in with the same problems. They wanted new phones, too. After a little over a month with the new one, it started doing the same thing. I called Verizon-again, and went to a Verizon store with a tech on staff. He looked at me like I had ten heads as if I was making this up. I was pretty mad. They offered me another new 8700! I said no way. Then they tried to push me into one of the $49.00 phones! I just paid $200.00 for this one! Finally they allowed me to swap out to a Samsung U700--the "Gleam." Looks like a make-up case. At least it works. Screen is not as big, but does have the slim design, 2.0 MP camera, and the same features as the 8700. Not my forst choice in phones, but gets the job done. If you are considering the LG VX8700, DON'T. It is a waste of money.
Great Phone, Even With VZ Crippleware January 28, 2008

I recently traded my LG VX10000 (Voyager) to this phone (LG VX8700). I didn't like the Voyager because it was too gimmicky with no one application that was excellent. Also, it was too big. Also the web browser application sucked. Not VZ's fault. The tech. just isn't there yet. Wait for WIMAX or whatever else comes along (2-5 years). Until then, web browsing will alway suck on a phone, including iphone. Stick to your computer. Anyway, with that said, the LG VX8700 phone is an excellent flip phone that does just about everything the Voyager did, but no web browser and mobile TV (no service in San Diego anyway). Granted, the Voyager was more customizable, but, they both have the crappy VZ user interface (UI), so what's the point?
Looks:
The 8700 is very cool looking with the brushed steel casing and the cool grey UI theme (as opposed to the standard red theme). The construction quality is excellent. The hinge seems it will hold up until my next NE2 upgrade. The dailing buttons are solid, as is the side buttons. The phone does had a "razor" look to it, but, with much better build quality. The shiny steel casing makes it a little flashy, but in a good way. The internal screen is absolutely gorgeous. It is very clear, crisp, and clean. The high resolution is an eye catcher (better than the voyager).
Battery:
Battery life is good. I charge about every two days, with an average of 50 txts a day and two hour talk time, plus an hour or so playing with the music and mobile 2.0. My Nokia 6236i used to be charged once a week, which is excellent. That's why the 8700 gets a good.
Camera:
I like the camera. I don't know why the other reviewers say its slow and crappy. How fast do you need it to be short of using a regular camera? It's plenty quick and it's fairly clear. The pictures come out great. And, you can adjust the camera to the particular environs of the shot (night, sunny, etc).
Music:
The music player is fine. Good sound and VZ UI for the music is not that entirely bad. It gets the job done. Plus, with the new firmware update, you can now place up to an 8gig microSDHC card on your phone. That's a lot of music. Still use my ipod, though, but the phone is great for just "on the go" listening.
Reception (i.e. Call quality):
I haven't had any issues with reception (never really have with VZ). My benchmark is the elevator at my office. It's a Gaussian cage that blocks all radio waves, it seems. Anyway, I get four bars in there. My Nokia used to be three, and my co-worker's Razor is one. I can hear voices loud and clear. No dropped calls or fuzzy reception. The speaker phone is fine. You can't turn it on until a call is made. I don't understand that. Anyway, I've never really met a speaker phone I liked anyway.
Ergonomics:
The phone is a little wide. But, it's comfortable to hold when talking. Txting is a little awkward with one hand. I like to cradle it with the other just so my thumb doesn't get tired. The metal isn't that prone to scratching, but, in this day and age, everyone should be protecting their hundreds of dollars portable electronic device with some sort of shield anyway ( I use invisishield).
Summary:
I like the phone. It's good quality phone that'll get the job done. It has everything of interest that VZ has to offer: Nav., Vcast, mobile 2.0, music, good camera, and good call quality. The only reason I give it four is because of VZ UI. Enjoy your new phone. Cheers

After having a LG chocolate for over a year, and having it replaced 5 times under warranty, it broke again. Verizon replaced it with this lovely phone, which is missing many of the features the chocolate had. It has no music alarm, and though the camera is 2MP, it has no auto focus. Getting pictures that are not blurry is very complicated, and usually impossible. It is not very ergonomic and my hand would hurt after talking on it too long, as would the phone heat up quite a bit after about a 20 minute conversation. The keys are not conducive to texting at all, I deleted many a long, almost finished text by trying to type something from the 3 key and hitting end instead.
I called Verizon Customer service to get a comparable phone to my old chocolate, since it was not my choice at all to get this phone. I ended up trading up to a samsung U900 flipshot, only paid $70, and love it!

I've had a lot of experience with bad phones (look at my other reviews!), and I threatened to cancel my Verizon service if they wouldn't give me a phone other than the KRZR when my third one broke. They told me I could get a VX8700, which I assumed was one of the free phones. When they pulled out out of the box, I was nothing short of surprised. I've only had it for a day, but it does everything it's supposed to do MUCH faster than any other phone I've owned. Highly recommended.
